Chapter 6 - THE SHOWDOWN AT THE GATESThe iron security gates of the Carter estate looked like the entrance to a medieval fortress against the snowy backdrop of the Massachusetts pines.

Marcus Sterling stood proudly beside a marked cruiser, flanked by two burly county sheriff's deputies who looked distinctly uncomfortable holding the official-looking papers Marcus had shoved into their hands.

As James walked down the long driveway alone, hands in his pockets, Marcus broke into a triumphant, sneering grin.

"Ah, the bodyguard!" Marcus crowed, stepping forward. "Hope you enjoyed your little sleepover, mister! But the party's over. Deputies, that man right there is harboring abducted minors and interfering with a lawful custody directive!"

The senior deputy stepped forward, peering closely at James’s face. Recognition flashed in the officer's eyes, and he instantly froze, his hand dropping away from his holster as if he had touched a live wire.

"Mr... Mr. Carter?" the deputy stammered, his face turning pale. "I—we didn't realize this was your private residence, sir."

Marcus frowned, spinning around to look at the deputy. "What are you talking about? Arrest him! He's aiding a fugitive!"

"Shut up, Sterling," the deputy snapped, glaring at Marcus before turning back to James respectfully. "Mr. Carter, we received a distress call and an emergency petition filed by this gentleman claiming parental alienation and flight."

James pulled a single folded document from his pocket and handed it to the deputy. "Officer, read the header on that injunction."

The deputy unfolded the paper, his eyes scanning the official federal seal and the signature of Judge Robert Sterling of the Massachusetts Superior Court.

"This... this is an emergency protective order," the deputy read aloud, his eyes widening. "Granting temporary sole custody and protective sanctuary to Rebecca Adams... backed by a federal restraining order against Marcus Sterling for wire fraud, embezzlement, and documented domestic endangerment."

Marcus’s triumphant smirk shattered into a million pieces. "That's—that's impossible! I bought those deputies in the city! You forged that!"

"I don't forge documents, Marcus," James said coldly, walking right up to him until they were nose-to-nose. "I buy companies. And as of thirty minutes ago, the shell corporation your father used to hide your embezzlement assets has just been acquired by Carter Holdings. Your father's board voted to strip you of your inheritance to protect the firm's liability."

Marcus staggered backward, clutching his head as his entire world collapsed in a span of ten seconds. "No... no, you can't do that! That's my family's money! That's my life!"

"Your life was spent destroying everyone who trusted you," James said quietly. "Now, turn around, get back in your car, and drive away. Because if you ever come within five miles of Rebecca or those little girls again, federal marshals won't just serve you papers—they'll lock you away where daylight is a luxury."

Defeated, broken, and utterly ruined, Marcus looked around wildly, realized he had no allies left, and stumbled back into his sedan. With tires screeching in despair, he fled down the mountain for the last time.
