Chapter 4 - CHASE THROUGH THE CRYPT — Unlocking the Mercer Vault

The old Elm Street Library was a massive, Gothic stone structure that looked more like a medieval fortress than a public building. It had been closed for renovations for months, its grand arched windows boarded up and dark.

Billy slid a keycard into a hidden reader beneath the brass plaque of the library’s side entrance. The heavy oak door clicked open with a deep, hydraulic sigh. He pulled the girls inside, closing the door behind them and plunging them into pitch darkness.

"It's dark," Tessa whispered, clinging to Billy's leg.

"I know, sweetie. Just a moment." Billy pulled out his satellite phone, using the screen's pale blue light to guide them through the towering aisles of dusty books.

They descended a winding stone staircase into the library’s archives—the "Crypt," as the students used to call it. But Billy wasn't looking for old manuscripts. He walked directly to a massive, steel-reinforced structural pillar in the center of the room.

He pressed his hand against a hidden panel on the stone. A red laser line swept across his retina.

User recognized: William Mercer III. Access granted.

A heavy section of the stone pillar slid backward with a low grind, revealing a modern, high-tech elevator cabin.

"This is our secret passage," Billy told the girls, trying to keep his voice light. "We're going deep underground."

Inside the elevator, the doors sealed shut, and they began to descend. When the doors opened again, they were standing in a sprawling, subterranean bunker filled with glowing computer servers, a wall of security monitors, and rows of tactical equipment. This was Billy’s contingency sanctuary—the place he built when he first realized his family wanted him dead.

"Whoa," Maisie gasped, looking at the glowing screens. "It looks like the lab. But warmer."

"This is my office," Billy said, setting his bag down. He immediately sat at the main terminal, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I need to see what Richard is doing."

He bypassed the local security feeds and hacked into the Mercer Global satellite network. What he saw on the screen made his blood run cold.

A live satellite feed showed three tactical transport helicopters heading directly toward their coordinates. But that wasn't the worst of it. A red warning light flashed on the corner of the screen:

BIOMETRIC WILL ACTIVATION IN PROGRESS. TIME REMAINING: 1 HOUR, 12 MINUTES.

"Richard is forcing the system," Billy muttered, staring at the screen. "He's using a synthetic DNA proxy to bypass the lock. He doesn't even need the girls alive anymore. If he can fake their biometric signatures for just ten seconds, the forty-billion-dollar trust will transfer to his personal account, and he will have total control of the company."

"Can we stop him?" Maisie asked, standing beside his chair, her small hand resting on his arm.

Billy looked at his daughter. Her face was a perfect mix of Eleanor’s soft features and his own stubborn jawline.

"Yes," Billy said, a cold determination settling over him. "But to do it, we have to upload your real DNA to the main mainframe in the Mercer headquarters downtown. We have to prove you are alive, free, and that Richard is committing fraud. But the moment we do that, they will pinpoint our exact location."

Suddenly, the security monitors flickered.

On the screen showing the library archives above, the stone doors of the library were blown inward. Armed mercenaries in black gear poured into the building, their weapons drawn.

They had found them.
