Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ledger

The study smelled of aged bourbon, expensive cigars, and old secrets. Dominic paced behind his massive mahogany desk, his phone pressed hard against his ear.
"Dig deeper," Dominic ordered, his voice dropping an octave as he glared out the floor-to-ceiling window toward the dark expanse of the Long Island Sound. "The agency sent her? No agency sends a civilian who can break through my outer detail without tripping a silent alarm. I want her entire life laid out on my desk by midnight—every address, every tax return, every phone call."
"Boss," came the gravelly voice of Sal, his loyal head of security, over the encrypted line. "We checked her credentials the moment she arrived this morning. Elena Vance. Clean record. Graduated top of her class in early childhood education from NYU, worked high-end private childcare in Manhattan. No criminal ties, no syndicate associations. But..."
"But what?" Dominic snapped.
"Her last employer... it was the Sterling family. You remember Arthur Sterling, the federal prosecutor who was handling the grand jury indictments against the Manhattan docks last fall?"
Dominic’s eyes narrowed. Sterling had suffered a "tragic" hit-and-run accident right before he could hand down indictments that would have crippled half the shipping syndicates on the East Coast.
"She was his kids' nanny," Sal continued. "She left three weeks after the accident. Said the environment was too toxic. Boss, she’s clean on paper, but coincidence in our world is just a synonym for a setup."
"Keep watching her," Dominic commanded, cutting the connection.

He tossed the phone onto the desk and walked over to the heavy oak door, pulling it open just a crack. Down the dimly lit hallway, light spilled from the nursery. He could hear the soft, melodic murmur of Elena’s voice reading a bedtime story. For fourteen months, that hallway had been a black hole of silence. Tonight, the air felt electric, humming with a strange, dangerous vitality.
Dominic gripped the doorframe, his mind warring between the instinct of a mob boss who trusted no one and the raw, bleeding desperation of a father who watched his daughters come back to life in the span of a single afternoon. If Elena Vance was an operative, she was playing a very long, very cruel game. And if she was genuine... she had just unlocked a door Dominic thought was locked forever.
