Chapter 8 - Ashes and Empire

The snow-capped peaks of the Adirondacks loomed against the dark, star-lit sky, surrounding the secluded timber-and-stone fortress where Dominic Russo had retreated with his daughters and his unexpected guest.

Inside the cabin, a roaring fire crackled in the massive stone hearth, casting a warm, amber glow across the rustic living room. The heavy iron doors were reinforced, the perimeter monitored by thermal drones, but for the first time in over a year, the air didn't feel like a tomb.

At the wooden dining table, Elena sat with the triplets, helping them sketch crayon drawings of snowmen while soft Italian folk music played from an old record player.

Dominic stood by the window, watching the reflection of the fire dance across the glass. The titanium flash drive was plugged into a secure military-grade laptop on the desk beside him. Lines of decrypted bank transfers, names of corrupt federal judges, and offshore shell companies scrolled endlessly across the screen—enough leverage to put half of Manhattan's elite and the entire Lupertazzi leadership behind bars for the rest of their natural lives.

His phone buzzed. It was Sal, calling from a secure line in the city.

"Boss," Sal reported, his voice triumphant. "We hit their primary shipping hub in Brooklyn an hour ago. Took out their revenue stream. Word on the street is the Lupertazzi capos are tearing themselves apart trying to figure out who leaked the federal files."

"Let them tear each other apart," Dominic said coldly. "Keep the pressure on."

He hung up and walked away from the desk, stepping toward the dining table.

Elena looked up, catching his eye. The harsh, intimidating mob boss was gone, replaced by a father who finally knew how to smile again.

"So, Mr. Russo," Elena said with a playful smirk, holding up a crooked crayon drawing of a cat handed to her by Mia. "Are you going to fire me now that the bad guys are half a state away, or do I have to keep babysitting you too?"

Dominic pulled out a chair opposite her, sitting down with a faint, rare smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

May you like

"You're not going anywhere, Elena Vance," Dominic said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a warmth that terrified him more than any gun ever could. "The contract is permanent."

The triplets giggled, clapping their hands together, while outside, the winter wind howled against the cabin walls—failing entirely to extinguish the fire that had finally reignited inside.
