Chapter 6 - THE RAT RUNS TO THE TRAPThree days later, Victor Hayes was unexpectedly released on a low bail—a bail secretly underwritten by a shell company controlled by Russell Kent.

It was part of my father’s plan.
A trapped rat in a cage is predictable. But a desperate rat let loose will run straight to its hidden stash.
Victor emerged from the county jail looking like a ghost. He had no money, no phone, no car, and nowhere to go. His mother’s Oak Brook mansion was locked, seized, and guarded by private security. His penthouse was sealed. His friends from the corporate world blocked his number.
Standing outside the jail, shivering in a cheap jacket provided by a local shelter, Victor remembered his final safety net.
Two years ago, when he was embezzling money from Meridian, he had set up an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under a fake company name: Apex Horizon Ltd. He had hidden $800,000 in encrypted cryptocurrency assets, stored on a hardware cold-wallet drive hidden inside a safe deposit box at a private, non-traditional bank in suburban Naperville.
He thought nobody knew about it. Not even me.
Victor walked three miles to a train station, begged a stranger for a train ticket, and took the suburban line to Naperville.
At 4:00 PM, he stumbled into the quiet, discreet lobby of Midwest Private Vaults.
"I need access to Box 412," Victor told the clerk, handing over his dirty, sweat-stained ID.
The clerk looked at the ID, checked the computer system, and smiled politely. "Right this way, Mr. Hayes."
Victor’s heart hammered in his chest. This is it, he thought, a insane grin spreading across his face. I have $800,000. I can take a bus to Mexico, buy a fake passport, and start over! Olivia didn't catch everything! I’m smarter than all of them!
The clerk led him into the cold, concrete vault room in the basement and unlocked the outer lock of Box 412. Victor used his key to open the inner mechanism.
He pulled out the metal box, his hands trembling violently. He opened the lid.
Inside the box, there was no hardware crypto wallet. There were no bearer bonds. There was no cash.
Inside the empty metal box lay a single, crisp white envelope with his name written on it in elegant, familiar handwriting.
Victor’s breath caught in his throat. He grabbed the envelope with trembling fingers and tore it open.
Inside was a single card. On it was printed a single line:
“Did you really think I didn't check the basement before I bought the house?” — Olivia.
Beneath the letter lay a receipt showing that the $800,000 in cryptocurrency had been legally liquidated and transferred to the Chicago Children’s Hospital forty-eight hours ago under the name The Olivia Hartwell Foundation for Victims of Domestic Abuse.
"NO!" Victor shrieked, knocking the metal box off the table. It clattered loudly against the concrete floor. "NO! NO! NO! MY MONEY! THAT'S MY MONEY!"
The vault door swung open.
Two heavy-set men in black suits stepped into the vault, accompanied by a police detective holding an arrest warrant.

"Victor Hayes," the detective said calmly. "You are under arrest for attempted money laundering, tax evasion, and illegal offshore asset concealment."
Victor fell to his knees on the cold vault floor, clutching the piece of paper, sobbing hysterically as the cold steel handcuffs clicked back onto his wrists.
