Chapter 1 - The Midnight Run to Boston

The heavy oak door of the third-floor study clicked shut behind Raphael, sealing off the world of shipping manifests, encrypted ledgers, and bloody territorial disputes. Down the servant staircase, Josephine Hartley hovered by the wooden banister like a ghost afraid of leaving a footprint. When Raphael reached her level, he didn't look at her trembling hands or crooked name pin. He simply gestured toward the front foyer with his keys.
“Move,” he said, his voice flat, allowing zero room for argument.
By the time they stepped out into the crisp, biting New England air, the courtyard was pitch black save for the amber glow of the security lanterns. Raphael’s custom-built black Mercedes sedan idled quietly in the private drive. He unlocked the passenger door, and Josephine slid inside as if she were stepping onto fragile ice. She pulled her coat tightly around her shoulders, keeping her gaze locked on her lap.
The tires crunched over the gravel as Raphael swung the vehicle out of the iron gates, leaving the sprawling Orsini estate behind. The highway stretched before them like a long, dark ribbon under a starless sky. For the first twenty miles, neither spoke. The silence in the cabin wasn't peaceful; it was heavy with unasked questions and the ticking clock of a surgical theater sixty miles away.
“Mr. Orsini,” Josephine finally whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the heater. “You didn't have to do this. I could have waited for the dawn bus. I’ve caused enough trouble.”
Raphael kept his eyes fixed on the asphalt ahead, the dashboard lights casting sharp shadows across his hardened jawline. “You didn't cause trouble, Josephine. You calculated a schedule for a tragedy because no one ever taught you how to accept an open hand.”
She swallowed hard, turning her face toward the passenger window to hide the fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. She had spent two years hiding in plain sight at the most dangerous estate in Massachusetts, scrubbing floors and polishing silver, all while guarding a secret that could get them both killed.

Suddenly, Raphael’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror.
A pair of high-beam headlights snapped on two hundred yards behind them, closing the distance with terrifying acceleration. Raphael’s hand dropped instinctively to the heavy leather holster beneath his left arm.
