Chapter 4 - SIEGE OF THE ESTATE

Glass rained down like deadly ice. The mansion shook, and the screaming of sirens was drowned out by the heavy, rhythmic thrumming of assault rifles outside.

“They’re here!” Elena yelled, drawing her weapon and taking cover behind the marble pillar. “Main gate breached! Multiple armored vehicles!”

Vane picked Clara up with one arm and grabbed my sweater collar with the other, dragging me toward a hidden panel behind the library fireplace. He pushed the wood molding, revealing a dark, steel-reinforced stairwell leading downward.

“Get inside! Both of you!” Vane commanded.

“What about you?” I yelled over the sound of shattering wood and screaming men outside.

“I don't run from my own house,” Vane growled. He pulled a second magazine from his pocket and slapped it into his pistol. He looked directly into my eyes, his grip on my shoulder tightening. “If I don't come down to the panic room in twenty minutes, take Clara through the tunnel under the sub-basement. It leads to the river. Do not stop. Do not look back.”

Before I could reply, he shoved us into the dark stairwell and slammed the heavy iron panel shut.

The stairs were pitch black, illuminated only by tiny emergency floor lights. I held Clara close to my chest, carrying her down the endless spiral steps as the sounds of gunfire and explosions echoed through the concrete walls above us.

When we reached the bottom, we found a high-tech panic room equipped with monitors, food supplies, and heavy steel doors. I locked the door behind us and set Clara down on a cot.

My hands were shaking violently. On the wall monitors, live CCTV footage showed the war taking place above. Men in tactical gear were storming the grand hallway, exchanging fire with Vane’s suits. Gunfire flashed, paintings caught fire, and bodies fell onto the polished marble floors.

Then, on Monitor 3, I saw him.

A man in a pale beige trench coat walked through the burning front doors, flanked by four heavily armed mercs. He walked with a slight limp, carrying a silver-plated revolver.

When he looked up into the camera, my blood ran cold.

I recognized him.

He wasn't a mobster. He was Detective Richard Vance—the lead detective who had questioned me six months ago when my elder brother mysteriously vanished without a trace.

Why was a decorated police detective leading a paramilitary assault on a mafia Don’s home?
