Chapter 6 - BLOOD AND REVENGE

Vance staggered back, a bullet tearing through his right shoulder. Blood splattered across the white wall behind him.

At the entrance of the ruined hallway stood Don Vane. His suit was torn, stained with soot and blood, and his left arm hung limply at his side. But in his right hand, he held a heavy assault rifle. His eyes were burning with pure, unadulterated fury.

“Get away from my family,” Vane growled.

Before Vance’s guards could raise their weapons, Vane pulled the trigger. A hail of bullets tore through the room. The two guards fell instantly. Vance scrambled behind a steel storage locker, clutching his bleeding shoulder and cursing loudly.

Vane fired another burst to suppress Vance, then sprinted toward us. He grabbed me by my shoulder, pulling me up from the floor, and swept Clara into his arms.

“The tunnel!” Vane yelled over the ringing in my ears. “Move!”

He kicked open a hidden steel hatch at the back of the panic room. Beyond it lay a dark, narrow stone tunnel smelling of stagnant river water. I scrambled inside first, followed by Vane, who pulled the heavy hatch shut and jammed a metal bar through the handles, sealing it from the inside.

We ran through the damp darkness. Vane was breathing heavily, his steps uneven.

“You’re hit,” I panted, looking at his bleeding arm.

“It’s nothing,” he grunted. “Keep moving. The tunnel exits at the abandoned docks a mile downstream.”

As we ran, the truth burned in my mind. I looked back at the scarred mob boss who was bleeding out to protect a girl he barely knew and the daughter he loved.

“Detective Vance… he knew my name,” I said, stopping in my tracks.

Vane paused, looking back at me in the dim light of the tunnel. “What?”

“Six months ago, my brother, Leo, went missing,” I said, my voice trembling as pieces of the nightmare began to lock together. “He was an accountant. He told me he found something huge at his firm—something involving city corruption. Detective Vance was the one assigned to his case. He told me Leo ran away with stolen money. But Vance was lying.”

Vane’s eyes softened, a dark realization dawning on his face. “Leo worked for Apex Financial?”

“Yes,” I whispered.

Vane took a heavy breath. “Leo didn't steal money, Maya. He found out that Detective Vance was using mob front companies to launder money for a human trafficking ring. Leo brought the files to me because he thought I could protect him.”

My heart stopped. “Where is my brother, Vane? Is he dead?”

Vane looked me dead in the eye. “No. I hid him.”
