Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM CONFRONTATIONThree days later, Audrey was resting in a secure, private VIP suite at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. Federal protection was stationed outside the door, and top specialists were tending to her physical and psychological recovery.

I sat in a chair beside her bed, peeling an orange, when her eyes fluttered open. The vacant, haunted look in her eyes had started to fade, replaced by a fragile warmth.

“Dad...?” she whispered, her voice still raspy.

“I'm right here, sweet girl,” I said, smiling gently as I handed her a small wedge of fruit. “You're safe. The hospital is secure, and those bastards are sitting in federal detention waiting for trial.”

Audrey chewed slowly, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Julian... he kept telling me that nobody would ever believe me. He said his family owned the judges, the police, everyone. When I made that call to you... I thought it was the last thing I'd ever do.”

“Julian lied about a lot of things,” I said, my voice steady and reassuring. “He forgot who raised you. Never doubt your own strength, Audrey. You survived hell.”

Suddenly, the heart monitor beside her bed spiked.

A sharp, rhythmic beep-beep-beep filled the room.

I whipped my head toward the IV drip stand. A microscopic, translucent bubble of air—or something else—wasn't there a second ago. But more importantly, the digital bedside clock flickered, and the secure hospital intercom system clicked on with a burst of static.

A distorted, synthesized voice echoed through the speaker in the room:

“Colonel Vale... enjoying the family reunion? It’s a shame it’s going to be so short-lived.”

My hand instantly dropped to the tactical SIG Sauer pistol concealed beneath my jacket. I scanned the room, my eyes locking onto the ceiling air vent. The screws had been freshly removed.

“Who's this?” I spoke into the open air, stepping in front of Audrey's bed to shield her.

“An old friend of Julian’s investors,” the voice hissed through the speaker, chuckling darkly. “You thought cutting off the Thorne family would stop the machine? You just cut off a lizard's tail, Colonel. The Ouroboros doesn't leave loose ends. And your daughter... she knows too much.”

Before the speaker could finish, I drew my pistol and fired three rapid shots straight into the ceiling speaker, shattering the electronics into a shower of sparks.

Simultaneously, the hallway outside erupted into chaos. Gunfire echoed through the hospital ward.
