Chapter 8 - The Final Vow and the Coffin's SecretThe smoke cleared to reveal a tall, broad-shouldered man in a worn tactical vest, his face hardened by years of hunting shadows. It was Commander Marcus Vance—the estranged brother of Inspector Vance, leading a heavily armed federal tactical strike team.

"Father Thomas. Your little medical experiment is over," Marcus roared, leveling his shotgun directly at the priest's chest.
Father Thomas stumbled backward, his hands flying up in surrender as red laser sights danced across his white lab coat. Doctor Paloma froze, her hands hovering helplessly over the smoking control console.
"Marcus... how did you...?" Father Thomas stammered, his voice trembling for the first time.
"You left a paper trail, Father. A trail of wire transfers leading straight from the Vatican’s confidential black-ops science grants to a dead priest's offshore account," Marcus said, stepping into the room and motioning for his team to secure the area.
Two tactical officers rushed forward, cutting the leather restraints holding Inspector Vance and Mother Caridad in their chairs. Vance slumped forward, gasping for breath as his brother caught him by the shoulder.
"Are you alright, brother?" Marcus asked.
"I'm... I'm alive," Vance choked out, rubbing his wrists. "Get Mother Caridad out of here. And check the recovery room... the real Sister Esperanza is hooked up to life support in there!"
Marcus nodded, motioning officers toward the glass partition.
Doctor Paloma tried to make a run for the hidden exit behind the cryogenic tanks, but a tactical officer blocked her path, slamming her hands against the steel counter and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"It's over, Thomas," Mother Caridad whispered fiercely, standing up with the support of Inspector Vance, her eyes blazing with righteous fury. "You tried to play God, but science cannot outrun the truth."
Father Thomas sneered, a dark, desperate laugh escaping his lips. "You think you've won, Mother? Look at the monitors. The project is already backed up to an off-site military server in Geneva. You can destroy this lab, but you cannot stop human progress!"
"No," a chilling voice echoed from the doorway.
Everyone turned. Standing in the entrance, supported by two medical technicians, was the real Sister Esperanza. She had been gently disconnected from life support, her eyes open, filled with a profound, sorrowful clarity as she looked directly at the priest who had exploited her body for years.
"You didn't build an empire, Thomas," Esperanza whispered, her voice shaking with quiet strength. "You built a prison. And every soul you locked away is finally free."
Before Father Thomas could lunge for a concealed weapon on the desk, Marcus stepped forward and brought the butt of his shotgun down hard across the priest's shoulder, sending him crashing to the floor in a heap of groaning agony.
Officers swarmed the room, cuffing Father Thomas and dragging him toward the exit.
Three weeks later, the sun shone brightly over the grand courtyard of the convent.
The underground laboratory had been sealed forever, filled with tons of concrete poured directly through the chapel floor, burying the dark secrets of Project Genesis beneath the sacred stone.
Mother Caridad stood by the courtyard fountain, watching the children—the three little ones rescued from the nursery—play happily in the grass under the care of a newly appointed, legitimate order of nursing sisters.

The scandal had shaken the church to its core, leading to sweeping investigations across the Vatican, but the convent had survived, cleansed of its darkness.
Mother Caridad reached down into her pocket and pulled out the tiny piece of medical tape she had found on that fateful morning weeks ago. With a quiet, peaceful smile, she dropped it into the rushing water of the fountain, watching as the current carried it away into the sunlight, forever.
