Chapter 6 - THE COMMAND INQUIRYOn Monday morning at precisely 08:45 AM, a black town car carrying Owen and me pulled up to the main headquarters building of Naval Station Everett.

This time, there were no young sailors standing at a gate struggling between conscience and duty. A squad of Naval Military Police officers stood at the entrance, their faces stern and rigid. When our car stopped, a Lieutenant Commander stepped forward, opened my door, and saluted cleanly.

"Mrs. Brooks, Mr. Bennett. Rear Admiral Vance is expecting you in Conference Room A."

As we walked through the wide, sterile hallways of the headquarters building, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Officers in spotless uniforms stood at attention along the walls, whispering in low, hushed tones as we passed. News of the scandal had ripped through the base like a wildfire. The legendary Commander Grant Brooks—the rising star of Northwest logistics—was under active federal investigation.

When the double doors to Conference Room A were opened, the sight inside was striking.

Sitting at the end of a long oval conference table was Rear Admiral Thomas Vance, a imposing man with silver hair, a chest covered in ribbon racks, and eyes like polished flint. Flanking him were two senior legal officers from the Navy Judge Advocate General Corps and an investigator from NCIS.

Sitting on the left side of the table was Grant.

He wore his Service Dress Blue uniform, but he looked completely unraveled. His eyes were bloodshot, his collar looked tight around his neck, and the arrogant, commanding posture he had maintained for years was gone, replaced by a restless, twitching anxiety. Sitting two chairs away from him was Claire Dawson, accompanied by two high-priced defense attorneys from Seattle.

When Grant saw me enter, he stood up abruptly.

"Natalie!" he blurted out, stepping forward. "Natalie, please, you need to tell them this is a massive misunderstanding! You don't have to do this!"

"Sit down, Commander Brooks!" Rear Admiral Vance’s voice cut through the room like a whip.

Grant froze, his mouth opening and closing uselessly, before slowly sinking back into his chair.

"Mrs. Brooks, Mr. Bennett, please take your seats," Admiral Vance said, gesturing to the seats opposite Grant and Claire. "We have reviewed the preliminary financial documentation submitted by the Bennett Harbor Foundation late last night. We have also reviewed the emergency national security order filed by Commander Brooks."

The Admiral turned his piercing gaze onto Grant.

"Commander Brooks," Vance began, his voice dangerously quiet. "You filed an emergency order claiming that the Bennett Foundation’s sudden withdrawal of grant capital threatened the operational integrity of Project Apex. Is that correct?"

"Yes, Admiral," Grant said quickly, leaning forward, trying desperately to regain his authoritative posture. "The foundation’s sudden financial freeze threatened to derail our critical software deployment. Mrs. Brooks acted out of emotional distress following a personal family dispute at the gate on Saturday. Her actions were personal, not operational."

"A personal family dispute?" I spoke up, my voice steady, sharp, and echoing across the quiet room. "Is that what you call instructing gate security to exclude your wife and nine-year-old son because your mistress and commercial business partner was inside your office?"

"This is not an affair!" Claire’s lead attorney interrupted smoothly. "Ms. Dawson’s presence on base was strictly professional, governed by her firm’s operational contract—"

"Save it, Counselor," Admiral Vance interjected coldly. "Because while you were drafting your injunctions last night, NCIS executed a federal search warrant on Ms. Dawson’s commercial servers in Bellevue and Commander Brooks’ personal quarters on base."

Grant’s face drained of all color.

The NCIS investigator sitting beside the Admiral opened a thick manila folder and slid three high-resolution photographs across the table.

They were internal communications logs retrieved from an encrypted server.

"Commander Brooks," the NCIS investigator said cleanly. "Can you explain why your private entity, Cascade Logistics, transferred four hundred thousand dollars to a banking account in Panama owned by a subsidiary of a foreign maritime shipping conglomerate... forty-eight hours after Ms. Dawson’s firm was granted access to the Project Apex hydrophone signal feeds?"

The silence in the conference room was absolute. You could hear the rain slapping against the glass windows.

Claire Dawson turned her head slowly to look at Grant, her eyes wide with sudden, terrifying realization.

"Grant..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "What did you do?"
