Chapter 2 - Echoes in the DarkThe red emergency lights pulsed against the sterile white walls like a warning beacon.

Edric lunged toward the wall speaker, his massive hands clawing desperately at the plastic grille as his own voice continued to bounce off the tile floors outside.
"You think you can hide behind your father's money, Clara? You think anyone cares what happens to these two little bitches?"
"Turn it off!" Edric bellowed, his composure completely shattering as he ripped the plastic speaker housing straight out of the drywall, wires sparking and snapping in a shower of blue light. The audio cut off instantly, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence inside the room.
Outside, however, the silence didn't last a second.
Heavy boots slammed against the hallway floor. Shouts echoed past our locked glass door—sharp, urgent voices demanding keys, calling for backup, and barking orders to secure the exits.
Clara dropped to her knees, clutching her head in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "He's going to ruin us... he's going to ruin everything..."
Edric spun around, his chest heaving, sweat beading heavily across his forehead. The charm, the calculated arrogance, the absolute control he had wielded over our household for years had evaporated into thin air. In its place was the desperate, cornered panic of a wild animal.
He didn't look at Clara. He didn't look at Chloe. His eyes locked entirely onto me, blazing with pure, unadulterated murderous intent.
"You little witch," Edric hissed, taking a slow, heavy step toward my bed. His fingers curled into thick, white-knuckled fists. "You recorded me. All this time... you had a phone."
"I told you I was remembering, Edric," I said, refusing to blink, even as my heart hammered violently against my ribs. I kept my hand sliding slowly across the bedsheet toward Chloe’s side. One squeeze.
Chloe’s fingers suddenly twitched beneath mine. A weak, trembling pressure answered back. Two squeezes.
She was waking up.
Edric didn't notice Chloe stirring. He was entirely consumed by me, blinded by rage. He reached out, grabbing the heavy metal IV pole beside my bed and ripping it free from its rolling base with a screech of tortured steel.
"If I'm going down," Edric snarled, raising the heavy iron pole high above his head, "I'm making sure neither of you ever makes it to your eighteenth birthday."
"Edric, NO!" Clara screamed from the floor, lunging forward to grab his ankle.
He kicked her away with a vicious swing of his boot, sending her crashing hard into the stainless-steel sink. Clara slumped over, unconscious.
Edric stepped over her body, the iron pole poised to strike. "Time to go to sleep, Faye."
Before the heavy metal could arc downward, the reinforced glass door of the examination room exploded inward with a deafening crash.
"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!"
Three armed security officers and two city police officers poured into the room, tasers drawn and aimed dead center at Edric’s chest.
Edric froze, the heavy iron pole hovering inches from my face. For a second, his eyes flickered toward the officers, then back to me, calculating the odds of a final lunge.
"Drop it! Drop it right now or we will fire!" the lead officer roared, stepping forward with his finger resting lightly on the trigger.
Slowly, agonizingly, Edric’s fingers loosened. The iron pole hit the linoleum floor with a heavy, hollow thud. He raised his hands slowly into the air, turning around to face the officers with a twisted, chilling grin.
"You're making a massive mistake," Edric muttered as the heavy steel handcuffs snapped onto his wrists with a sharp click. "I'm their legal guardian. They belong to me."
"Not anymore, you don't," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.
A tall man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped past the officers, his silver-streaked hair neat, his expression carved from absolute stone. He looked down at Edric with eyes so cold they could freeze fire.

My breath caught in my throat.
"Uncle Alan?" I whispered.
