Chapter 5 - The Birthday That Changed EverythingOctober 24th arrived with a biting chill that whispered of coming winter.

Our eighteenth birthday.
The day the protected trust funds would officially transfer into our names. The day we legally became adults, completely free from guardianship, foster systems, and the suffocating shadow of Edric Kaine.
Uncle Alan had organized a quiet, elegant dinner at a private rooftop restaurant overlooking the city skyline. Just the three of us—celebrating survival, new beginnings, and a future that belonged entirely to us.
We wore matching emerald-green dresses that Alan had bought for us, laughing as the restaurant waiters continually mixed up our names, just like our old teachers used to do. But this time, it didn't feel confusing or scary. It felt like a badge of honor.
"To Faye and Chloe," Uncle Alan said, raising his crystal champagne flute toward us, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "May your futures be filled with light, freedom, and unbreakable strength."
"To us," Chloe smiled, clinking her glass against his, before turning to clink mine.
We stayed out late, watching the city lights twinkle below us like a million stars scattered across the asphalt. By the time Uncle Alan’s private town car dropped us off downstairs at the secure penthouse lobby, it was past midnight.
"Go on up," Alan said, kissing us both on the forehead from the front seat. "I have to meet with my lead forensic accountant down at the office to finalize the last paperwork transfers. I'll be back by morning. Your security detail is stationed inside the lobby and on the penthouse floor."
"Drive safe, Uncle Alan," I said, waving as the car pulled away into the misty night.
Chloe and I walked into the private elevator, chatting excitedly about university applications and apartment redecorating ideas. The elevator doors slid open smoothly on the penthouse floor, revealing our expansive, beautifully lit hallway.
"I'm going to take a long, hot shower," Chloe stretched, kicking off her heels by the doorway. "Call me if you want to watch a movie!"
"Deal," I smiled, walking down the carpeted hallway toward my bedroom.
I pushed my bedroom door open, stepping into the quiet, moonlit room. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out at the panoramic view of the harbor. The city was breathtakingly quiet at this hour.
Click.
The sound was faint, but in the absolute silence of the penthouse, it echoed like a gunshot.
I froze.
It wasn't the sound of the front door opening. It was the distinct, unmistakable click of a deadbolt sliding into place from the inside of my bedroom.
My heart hammered violently against my ribs. I slowly turned around, my breath catching in my throat.

Standing in the shadows near my walk-in closet, framed by the pale moonlight, was a tall, heavily built figure wearing a dark tactical jacket and a balaclava mask. In his right hand, he held a sleek, silenced pistol aimed directly at my chest.
"Happy eighteenth birthday, Faye," a deep, gravelly voice whispered from behind the mask. "Edric sends his regards."
