The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind Samuel, leaving a silence so absolute that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like a striking hammer. In the center of the library, Arthur Pembroke remained frozen in his pose of feigned slumber, his chest rising and falling in a calculated, rhythmic cadence. Yet, beneath his tailored woolen vest, his heart gave an unexpected, sharp thud. / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Twist in the ContractJust as Samuel reached out with shaking hands to pick up the legal document, the heavy wooden door of the cottage burst open.

A gust of freezing wind whipped into the room, followed by the hurried footsteps of Arthur’s personal attorney, Victor Vance, holding a sleek black leather briefcase and a tablet computer displaying a flashing red notification.

"Mr. Pembroke! Thank God I found you!" Victor panted, his face pale with panic. "You need to come back to the main house immediately. There’s an emergency."

Arthur frowned, irritation flashing across his weathered face. "Victor, can't you see I'm in the middle of a life-altering conversation? What could possibly be an emergency right now? My legacy has just been redeemed."

"It's not about your legacy, sir—it's about your will," Victor said, his voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper that made Samuel and Theo take a step back. "Word just leaked from our corporate board meeting. Your nephew, Julian Pembroke, has filed an emergency injunction in the Supreme Court. He’s claiming you are mentally incompetent, citing your recent erratic behavior and your secret transfer of foundation funds."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Julian... that ungrateful, corporate leech."

"It gets worse, sir," Victor continued, holding up the tablet. "Julian’s legal team has weaponized your own 'Test of Conscience' against you. They hired a private investigator who installed hidden micro-cameras in the library. They recorded the entire setup with the five thousand dollars on the table today!"

Samuel gasped, his eyes darting to Arthur in sheer horror. "You... you tested us? The money on the table... it was a trap?"
