Chapter 6 - THE LEDGER OF THE LOSTThe emergency lights of three ambulances painted the exterior of St. Jude Memorial Hospital in flashing bars of crimson and electric blue. Inside, the pediatric ward had been turned into a secure command post.

Sarah Cole sat wrapped in three thermal blankets on a hospital bed, sipping warm broth while a team of doctors checked her vitals. Just two beds away, little Eli was sleeping soundly, his breathing slow and even for the first time in his life, his small hand still loosely gripping the edge of Claire Morgan’s sleeve.
Daniel stood outside the room in the hallway, reviewing a thick, leather-bound black ledger that deputies had recovered from Travis’s hidden wall safe behind the cabin’s fireplace.
The pages were filled with neat, meticulous handwriting—not Travis’s clumsy scrawl, but an accountant’s precision. Names, dates, wire transfer amounts, and real estate parcel numbers spanned across five years of illegal operations.
“It’s a human trafficking ring operating right under the noses of the state zoning board,” a voice said behind him.
Daniel turned to see Special Agent Vance of the FBI’s Tampa field office stepping out of the elevator, flanked by two federal agents in dark windbreakers.
“Agent Vance,” Daniel greeted, extending a hand. “I didn't expect federal presence so fast.”
Vance shook his hand firmly, his eyes fixed on the black ledger. “Sheriff Miller contacted us the moment his deputies pulled that ledger out of the safe. Officer Reyes, you have no idea what you’ve stumbled into. This isn't just a local developer gone rogue. Travis Cole was the primary funnel for a multi-state network specializing in identity erasure and illegal adoptions for high-net-worth buyers.”
Vance flipped open the ledger to a marked page. “Look at this entry from two years ago. A couple from Miami paid four hundred thousand dollars for a healthy infant—born right here in this county, listed on official hospital records as a stillbirth.”
Daniel felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. “Eli.”
“Not just Eli,” Vance said grimly. “According to these shipping manifests, Travis used the underground cells beneath those old logging cabins to hold mothers whose disappearance could easily be blamed on voluntary abandonment. Once the babies were old enough to pass off as orphans or abandoned foundlings, they were funneled into the adoption black market.”
Vance looked down the hallway toward Eli’s room. “And the buyers? Powerful people. Politicians, judges, corporate executives. People who thought they were entirely untouchable.”
“Well, Travis isn't untouchable anymore,” Daniel said. “He’s currently locked in a holding cell at the county jail.”
Agent Vance let out a humorless smile. “About that, Officer... you might want to see what’s happening down in booking right now.”
Before Daniel could ask what he meant, his personal cell phone began to vibrate violently in his tactical vest pocket. He pulled it out. The screen flashed an incoming call from Sheriff’s Dispatch Desk.
Daniel swiped answer and pressed the phone to his ear. “Reyes here. Go ahead.”
“Daniel! Thank God I reached you,” the dispatcher’s voice shouted over the line, laced with sheer panic and heavy background static. “You need to get back to the county precinct right now! Transport unit seven just arrived with Travis Cole, but... but the intake officers... they’re unresponsive!”
May you like
“Unresponsive? What are you talking about? Did he try to escape?”
“No!” the dispatcher cried, her voice cracking. “The coffee in the booking room... someone spiked it with something fast-acting. Travis is gone. And the two deputies on duty... Daniel, they’re not breathing.”
