Chapter 4 - Ambush in the Archives

In the pitch-black basement of the county courthouse, Elena and Tom held their breath as the beam of the tactical flashlight swept across the floor just inches from their boots.
"Sweep the perimeter," a gruff voice commanded. "The order from the DA's office is absolute. No files leave this basement. If anyone is down here... make it look like a structural accident."
Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. Structural accident. They weren't just here to secure files; they were here to eliminate witnesses.
She glanced at Tom. He was shaking, his hand clenched into a white-knuckled fist. Without making a sound, Elena reached into her coat pocket and gripped her heavy glass-encased legal stamp. It wasn't much of a weapon, but it was all she had.
The footsteps drew closer. The beam of light illuminated the dust motes dancing in the damp air. It drifted across the shelf where they hid, pausing right on the toe of Tom’s leather shoe.
A shadow loomed over them. A man in a plain black tactical vest, his face obscured by a balaclava, stepped into the aisle. He raised a silenced pistol, his eyes cold and dead behind dark tactical goggles.
Before he could pull the trigger, Tom lunged forward with the desperation of a cornered animal, slamming his shoulder directly into the operative’s midsection.
The man grunted, crashing backward into a stack of metal storage boxes. Files cascaded down like an avalanche of white paper.
"Run, Elena!" Tom screamed, wrestling with the operative for control of the pistol.
"Tom, no!" Elena yelled back, but a second operative rounded the corner from the opposite aisle, his heavy boots slamming into Tom’s ribs with a sickening crunch. Tom crumpled to the floor, gasping for air.
The second operative turned his weapon toward Elena, a grim, mechanical efficiency in his movements. "End of the line, counselor."
Elena closed her eyes, bracing for the impact. But before the shot could ring out, the entire basement shuddered. A deafening roar—not of a gunshot, but of industrial machinery giving way—ripped through the room.
The ceiling above the operatives cracked wide open. Tons of concrete, twisted rebar, and water pipes burst downward, burying the two armed men beneath a mountain of rubble.
Through the massive hole in the ceiling, a bright beam of light cut through the dust. A heavy-duty winch lowered a rope ladder down into the gloom.
At the top of the ladder, silhouetted against the stormy night sky, stood an unexpected figure in a heavy rain slicker.

It was Guard Marcus Vance.
"Grab the files, counselor!" Vance shouted over the howling wind. "We've got an execution to stop!"
