Chapter 4 - The Offshore Escape RouteBy 11:00 p.m., the digital war room in the bakery basement was humming with relentless energy. The secondary monitors displayed real-time tracking data routed through encrypted proxy servers.

Just as I predicted, the moment Detective Vance leaked the fabricated rumor about an impending state raid on Thorne & Sterling Acquisitions, Julian panicked.

On screen, our automated ledger scraper detected massive capital flight movements. Millions of dollars were being systematically funneled out of primary corporate holdings and redirected into a master holding account in the Cayman Islands, controlled by an anonymous shell entity named Aegis Holdings.

"He's taking the bait," Chloe whispered, standing behind my chair with a cup of black coffee. "He’s moving all of the illegal liquidity into a single offshore vault so he can flee."

"Not just any vault," I corrected, my fingers dancing across the keyboard as I cracked the encryption hash on Aegis Holdings. "Look at the master beneficiary signature on the account."

Chloe leaned in closer to the monitor. The name appearing on the decrypted metadata wasn't Julian Thorne.

It was Eleanor Thorne.

"Good grief," Chloe gasped. "Even her own son is just a pawn. Eleanor is cutting Julian loose and taking all the stolen money for herself."

"Mother of the year," I muttered darkly. "Eleanor has been embezzling from her own family trust and corporate partners for decades, framing subordinate partners and husbands whenever things got too hot. Julian thinks he's the mastermind, but he's just the fall guy."

Suddenly, my secure comm-link beeped. It was an encrypted audio transmission from Detective Vance.

I clicked accept. Vance’s nervous breathing filled the speakers.

"Madeline... you were right," Vance whispered urgently. "Julian just booked a private charter flight out of the municipal airfield for 2:00 a.m. Destination: Grand Cayman. He’s packing cash, bearer bonds, and physical gold bullion. His mother isn't going with him; she’s staying at the estate to manage the fallout."

"Thank you, Marcus," I said calmly. "You've done well. Stay in your precinct, lock your office door, and don't answer calls from anyone named Thorne."

I disconnected the transmission and turned to Chloe.

"It's time," I said, standing up and slipping my leather jacket over my shoulders. "We are going to pay Eleanor a late-night visit."

"What about Julian?" Chloe asked. "He's escaping!"

"Let him run to the airfield," I smiled coldly. "He'll find out that when you steal from a forensic auditor, your getaway plane doesn't go to the Caribbean. It lands right in the middle of a federal sting operation."

At midnight, my car slipped quietly out of the bakery parking lot, its headlights off until we hit the main highway.

Forty minutes later, we pulled off onto a secluded wooded access road bordering the sprawling, iron-gated estate of the Thorne family. The grand colonial mansion sat majestically atop a rolling hill, its upper-floor windows glowing softly against the dark, starless night.

We parked the car deep in the treeline. Walking silently through the damp grass, Chloe and I approached the perimeter security fence.

Using a specialized wire-cutter I had kept from my state investigator days, I snipped through the electronic sensor wire of the perimeter alarm without tripping the silent alert. We slipped through the gap like ghosts.

As we reached the side terrace doors of the mansion, we heard raised voices echoing from the grand study inside.

We crept up to the French doors, which were cracked open just an inch to let in the cool night breeze. Peering inside, we saw Eleanor Thorne pacing back and forth across the Persian rug, holding a silver telephone receiver to her ear, her face twisted in absolute fury.

"What do you mean the accounts are frozen, Julian?!" Eleanor screamed into the phone. "Stop panicking and override the security protocol!"

We couldn't hear Julian's frantic response, but Eleanor's reaction was instantaneous and chilling.

"You fool!" Eleanor snarled. "If the state seizes those accounts, we are both finished! I should have gotten rid of you the same way I got rid of your father—and your wretched first wife!"

Inside the room, the phone line went dead silent.

And outside in the shadows, Chloe and I exchanged a triumphant glance.

Eleanor had just confessed on an open speakerphone line to double-homicide.
