Chapter 7 - THE REBUILDING OF AN EMPIREThe corporate restructuring of Hayes Hospitality—now officially rebranded as Vance-Hayes Global Holdings—was the most talked-about business story in New York City throughout the spring of 2026.

The financial tabloids had a field day predicting our immediate collapse, running sensational headlines about the fallen Hayes family being rescued by a mysterious young multi-billionaire tech and real estate mogul. But they didn't know the half of it.

My father was furious at first, humiliated by the loss of his absolute control, but as the weeks passed and he watched me navigate the boardroom with a fierce, uncompromising intelligence he never knew I possessed, his anger melted into quiet, humbled respect. He moved into a comfortable, modern townhouse in Westchester that Gabriel had quietly secured for my parents—not as a charity case, but as part of an advisory retainer package that allowed my father to retire with his dignity intact.

For me, the real work began on day one.

Gabriel and I worked side by side in the Madison Avenue obsidian boardroom, often late into the night, reviewing architectural plans, financial audits, and employee welfare programs. We didn't just rebuild hotels; we rebuilt their corporate soul. We established community feeding programs in every city where our properties operated, partnering with local shelters and food banks to ensure that no child in our neighborhoods ever had to wonder where their next meal was coming from.

One afternoon in late May, as we reviewed blueprints for a new flagship hotel in downtown Manhattan, Gabriel leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his eyes with fatigue.

"You're working yourself to the bone, Valentina," he noted, tossing his pen onto the table. "Take the rest of the afternoon off. Go walk in Central Park. The weather is gorgeous."

"I'm fine," I insisted, though my shoulders ached from hours hunched over spreadsheets. "Besides, I have a meeting with the community outreach director at four."

Gabriel stood up, walked around the table, and gently pulled the tablet out of my hands, setting it aside. He reached down and took both of my hands in his, pulling me up from my chair.

"Come with me," he said, a mysterious smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"Gabriel, where are we going? We have the quarterly review—"

"The quarterly review can wait. Trust me."
