Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM PROPOSALThree months later, on a balmy Friday evening in August, the obsidian boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Aethelgard Capital was transformed into something entirely unexpected.

The massive glass windows were illuminated by the golden glow of a Manhattan sunset, casting long, amber shadows across the floor. String lights were strung along the minimalist ceiling, and a single table in the center was set for two with crystal glassware, white linens, and champagne chilling in a silver bucket.

There were no spreadsheets. No legal documents. No hostile takeover notices.

Just us.

We had just finished a quiet, intimate dinner prepared by one of the top chefs from our newly renovated flagship hotel, sharing stories of our childhoods, laughing about the absurdities of high-society New York, and celebrating the successful public relaunch of Vance-Hayes Global Holdings.

As the dessert plates were cleared away, Gabriel stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and dropped gracefully to one knee right in front of me.

My breath caught in my throat. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box. He popped open the lid, revealing a magnificent, flawless diamond ring that caught the amber light of the setting sun, sparkling with a million brilliant facets.

"Valentina," he began, his voice steady, rich, and filled with an emotion so profound it brought tears rushing to my eyes. "When I was a five-year-old kid shivering outside those iron gates, I didn't believe in miracles. I didn't believe people cared about anyone outside their own locked doors. But then you walked out of that school with a turkey sandwich and a heart that refused to look away."

He paused, taking my trembling hand in his.

"You saved me long before I had the power to save myself," Gabriel continued, his hazel eyes locking onto mine with an unshakeable devotion. "You gave me a reason to fight, a reason to survive, and a reason to build an empire just so I could spend the rest of my life laying it at your feet. Marry me, Valentina. Let’s spend the rest of our lives making sure nobody ever has to stand outside the gate alone again."

I didn't hesitate. I didn't need a single second to think.

"Yes," I choked out, a sob of pure happiness breaking through my voice. "Yes, Gabriel, a million times yes."

He slid the stunning diamond ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into his arms, crushing his lips against mine in a kiss that bridged sixteen years of longing, pain, survival, and ultimate redemption.
