Chapter 1 - The Briefcase and the WarrantThe heavy oak doors of the Fairfield Officers Club slammed shut behind Major Harrison Vance like a guillotine blade dropping.

Inside the grand ballroom, the music had not yet resumed. Two hundred guests sat in stunned, uncomfortable silence, their crystal glasses frozen halfway to their lips. Marlene Bennett stood paralyzed on the stage, the silver silk of her dress catching the stage lights as her practiced smile cracked down the middle.

Major Vance didn't look at the bride. He didn't look at the groom, nor at Grant Caldwell, whose face had gone the color of spoiled milk. The JAG officer's eyes swept the room with military precision before locking directly onto the head table.

"Marlene Bennett?" Vance’s voice was clipped, carrying effortlessly over the silenced acoustic tiles of the ballroom.

Marlene blinked, stepping tentatively toward the edge of the stage. Her microphone squawked with feedback. "Yes? I'm Mrs. Caldwell, but—is there a problem, Major? This is a private wedding reception—"

"Major Harrison Vance, Judge Advocate General’s Corps," Vance announced, unzipping a sleek leather folio. He pulled out a stack of heavy, cream-colored federal documents stamped with the seal of the Department of Defense. "I am here on direct orders from the Inspector General and the Office of the Secretary of the Army. I have a federal subpoena, an asset freeze order, and a warrant for immediate forensic audit regarding fraudulent misappropriation of military contractor funds, tax evasion, and interstate wire fraud."

A collective gasp sucked the remaining air out of the room.

Sloane shrieked, clutching her white wedding gown as if it were about to catch fire. "Dad! What is he talking about? Make him stop!"

Grant Caldwell stumbled backward, his chair clattering against the parquet floor. "This is insane! You can't just barge in here—do you know who I am? I am the primary defense logistics supplier for this entire region!"

"Precisely, Mr. Caldwell," Major Vance replied, his tone chillingly polite as he stepped up onto the stage. "And for the past six years, your defense logistics firm, Caldwell Global Industries, has been systematically funneling ghost-contract billings through shell corporations, while illegally seizing proprietary military technology patents developed by active-duty personnel."

Vance turned his gaze slowly from Grant to Marlene. "Patents, Mrs. Caldwell, that belonged exclusively to Major Claire Bennett."
