Chapter 6 - The Worldwide Broadcast

Three days later, the grand media auditorium inside the palace was packed to absolute capacity. Over five hundred journalists from every corner of the globe sat under blinding television lights, their cameras aimed at a single mahogany podium.

There was no royal seal on the podium today.

Instead, the backdrop was entirely neutral.

When the side door opened, Rachel walked out.

She wasn't wearing her multi-million-dollar designer wedding gown. She wasn't wearing diamond tiaras or custom jewelry. She wore a simple, unadorned navy blue business suit—ironic, given the circumstances. Her hair was pulled back into a simple, neat ponytail, and she wore minimal makeup.

Beside her stood Prince Alexander, his expression solemn and supportive, choosing to stand by her side through the public humiliation as part of their renewed marital agreement.

And sitting in the front row, flanked by Mom and Dad, was me.

Rachel stepped up to the microphone. The room erupted into a deafening wall of camera shutters, flashing like a violent thunderstorm.

She raised her hand slightly, and the room slowly quieted down.

"Thank you all for coming," Rachel began, her voice trembling slightly at first before steadying itself. "For the past week, the world has watched a fairy tale unfold. But fairy tales are often carefully edited illusions designed to hide uncomfortable truths."

She paused, taking a deep breath.

"Three days ago, at my wedding, an incident occurred that exposed my own profound failings. Out of fear of judgment, out of an obsessive desire for perfection, and out of a shameful vanity, I attempted to erase my past. I attempted to hide the hardworking, honest family that raised me in Ohio. And most egregiously, I banned my own sister—Commander Emily Carter of the United States Navy—from my wedding because I believed her uniform and her service did not fit the 'image' I wanted to project."

The auditorium was so quiet you could hear the reporters breathing.

"I lied to the media," Rachel continued, her eyes fixed straight ahead, refusing to look down. "I lied to my husband. And I treated a woman who risked her life to save my husband’s family with disrespect and cruelty."

She turned her head slightly, looking directly into the bank of television cameras that were broadcasting her words to hundreds of millions of viewers across the planet.

"To my parents, Dad and Mom: I am deeply, profoundly sorry for being ashamed of the very hands that worked to give me a future. And to my sister, Emily..."

Rachel’s voice choked up for a second, and a single tear traced down her cheek.

"...thank you for your service, your courage, and for having more integrity in your little finger than I have shown in my entire adult life. I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I will be stepping back from all royal duties to undergo the probationary period mandated by the crown."

She stepped away from the podium, bowed her head slightly, and walked off the stage with Alexander following closely behind her.

The press room exploded into a chaotic storm of shouting questions, but I didn't hear them.

Dad leaned over, putting his arm around my shoulders, while Mom reached out and squeezed my hand.
