Chapter 7 - The Aftermath and the New DawnTwo weeks after the broadcast, the dust storm of the royal scandal began to settle into a new, manageable reality.

Rachel and Alexander had flown to a private estate in the countryside, far away from the prying eyes of London tabloids, where they were quietly beginning the long, grueling process of counseling and rebuilding their marriage from the ground up. Rachel had traded her high-society charity galas for manual volunteer work at local community shelters—a humbling experience that, according to Mom’s weekly phone calls, was finally teaching her the value of genuine, unpretentious human connection.

As for me, my leave from the U.S. Navy was coming to an end.

I stood on the deck of a naval vessel stationed back near the Atlantic coast, the salty sea breeze whipping my hair around my face as the sun began to sink below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and amber.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out and saw a text message from an unknown international number.

“Em, just wanted to let you know today at the shelter, I helped an elderly veteran file his paperwork. He reminded me a lot of Dad. Thinking of you. Love, R.”

I stared at the screen for a long moment. A small, genuine smile touched the corners of my mouth.

I didn't type out a long reply. I just sent a simple thumbs-up emoji and slipped the phone back into my pocket.

The sea was calm. The ship was steady.

And as I looked out over the vast, beautiful ocean, I knew I was exactly where I belonged.
