Chapter 3 - The Breakfast AmbushThe next morning, the grand dining hall of the Reyes estate was bathed in bright morning sunlight, but the atmosphere around the breakfast table felt as cold as winter ice.

Victoria sat at the opposite end of the mahogany table, pouring fresh black coffee into a porcelain cup with immaculate grace. She wore a tailored ivory silk blouse, her blonde hair pinned back into a sleek, flawless twist.

Alejandro sat beside her, rubbing his temples, exhausted from weeks of sleepless nights and crushing corporate stress.

“Good morning, Camila,” Victoria said, offering a sweet, condescending smile as I walked into the room. “You look rather pale. Did you stay up late reading again? Really, you should find a hobby. Forensic accounting is such a dreary little fixation.”

I didn't answer right away. I pulled out my chair directly across from her, sitting down with quiet, deliberate calm.

Lucía sat quietly between her father and me, keeping her eyes fixed on her cereal bowl, though a tiny, knowing smirk played at the corners of her mouth.

“Not a fixation, Victoria,” I replied evenly, resting my hands flat on the table. “Just a profession. And sometimes, professions require us to uncover things that people spend a lot of money trying to hide.”

Victoria’s hand paused mid-pour, coffee sloshing slightly into the saucer. Her eyes narrowed into cold slits. “What is that supposed to mean?”

Before I could answer, Alejandro looked up, groaning quietly. “Camila, please. Not this morning. I have an emergency board meeting at Reyes Development in an hour. We’re trying to finalize the quarterly restructuring.”

“The restructuring that Victoria engineered?” I asked, turning my gaze to my brother. “The one where you hand over full executive signing authority to her brother’s shell corporation?”

Alejandro slammed his coffee mug down onto the table. “Enough, Camila! Victoria has saved this family from ruin while you’ve been sitting around accusing her of plotting against us! She loves this family!”

“Does she?”

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out a thick, heavy manila folder, and slid it smoothly across the mahogany table.
