Chapter 10 - Checkmate

I turned my head toward the access gate behind the motor pool. Headlights cut through the heavy morning fog as a heavy transport flatbed rolled slowly into the compound, carrying two brand-new, fully operational recovery vehicles straight from the division depot at Fort Bragg.
Stepping out of the cab of the lead transport truck was Sergeant Major Thomas Vance, holding a signed transfer order bearing the signature of the Commanding General of the United States Army Forces Command.
"Special delivery for the 1st Battalion, ma'am," Vance barked, saluting crisply as he walked over. "Authorized by the Division Commander himself at 0200 hours this morning, after I briefed him on the... unique administrative challenges facing Colonel Thorne's unit."
Thorne looked like he had just been hit by a flashbang grenade. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. The smug confidence he had worn like armor for the last twelve hours had completely disintegrated, leaving behind the panicked expression of a man whose entire career had just imploded in slow motion.
"You... you went over my head to Division?" Thorne choked out, his voice trembling with humiliated rage.
"I didn't go over your head, David," I said, stepping past him and climbing up onto the steel track of the nearest Abrams tank. I looked down at the hundreds of soldiers staring up in stunned, absolute silence. "I went around the obstacle. That’s what armor officers do."
I pulled my identification badge from my pocket, flipped it open for a fraction of a second, and then slid it securely back into place.
"Effective immediately, Lieutenant Colonel Thorne is relieved of command of the 1st Battalion, pending a formal inquiry into logistics falsification and insubordination. Sergeant Major Vance will assume temporary administrative oversight of the battalion."
Vance snapped a sharp salute. "Understood, Colonel."

I looked down at Thorne, who was standing frozen on the asphalt, his career flashing before his eyes like a burning tank in the desert.
"Welcome to the 3rd Armored Cavalry," I said into the freezing morning air, looking out over the silent regiment. "Form up. We have work to do."
