Chapter 5 - The Snake in the TowerPain throbbed behind my eyes like a sledgehammer hitting anvil steel.

My hands were bound tightly behind my back with heavy-duty plastic zip-ties, suspended from an overhead water pipe in the basement of the abandoned warehouse. Blood dripped down my temple, landing with a slow drip, drip, drip on the dirt floor.

"You're making a mistake, Uncle," I grunted, testing the tension of the plastic restraints.

Richard sat comfortably on a folding chair across from me, casually wiping off his leather gloves. "A mistake? Marcus, my dear boy, I’ve been running this empire for fifteen years. Your father was too soft for it. Your grandfather was too righteous. And you? You were just an inconvenient hero."

"My mother... did she know about Dad? About Grandfather?"

Richard chuckled, a hollow, terrifying sound. "Eleanor? Please. She’s a narcissistic fool driven by vanity. I gave her an allowance, fed her ego, and let her think she was controlling the family estate. In exchange, she kept your wife isolated so Sophia wouldn't discover the hidden vault beneath your grandfather’s house."

Everything clicked into place. The home wasn't just real estate; it was the physical vault where my grandfather had stored hard evidence of Richard's treasonous supply-chain network.

"Sophia never knew about the vault," I said through gritted teeth.

"It doesn't matter what she knew. She was in the way," Richard said, checking his gold Rolex. "In about twenty minutes, a small fire will break out in the pediatric unit at St. Jude’s Hospital. Tragically, your wife and son won't make it out. You, broken by grief, will be found here—having taken your own life."

He stood up, adjusting his tailored suit jacket. "A tragic military family dynamic."

"You forgot one thing, Uncle," I murmured, my voice dropping an octave.

Richard paused at the foot of the wooden stairs. "Oh? And what’s that?"

"You left me alone with Greg."

Richard frowned, turning his head—just as Greg, who had quietly crawled behind him while Richard was gloating, jabbed a heavy syringe straight into Richard’s thigh.

Richard shrieked, stumbling backward as the powerful sedative hit his bloodstream. "You... you traitor!"

"He paid me half up front..." Greg gasped from the floor, blood pooling around his chest. "You... you promised the rest three weeks ago, Richard..."

As Richard collapsed onto the floor, his muscles seizing up, I used his falling momentum to kick hard against the rusted pipe above me. The ancient iron fitting groaned under my weight, snapped, and plunged me to the ground.

I dragged my bound hands over the jagged edge of the broken iron pipe, slicing through the zip-ties in seconds.

Chapter 5 Cliffhanger Hook: I grabbed Richard's phone off his unconscious body, unlocked it with his thumbprint, and dialed Officer Ramirez. “Ramirez, trace this line. Send every tactical team you have to St. Jude’s Hospital right now. They're going after my family!”
