Chapter 7 - The ICU Vigil and the Legal TrapForty-eight hours later, the sterile white lights of St. Jude’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit hummed with quiet urgency.

Emma lay in a specialized adjustable hospital bed, her skin finally regaining a faint touch of natural warmth. The ventilator had been removed twelve hours prior, replaced by nasal cannula oxygen, and her vital signs had stabilized following emergency uterine artery embolization and four units of whole-blood transfusions.
Sitting in the uncomfortable plastic armchair beside her bed was Marcus, cradling sleeping baby Ethan against his chest while quietly reading a thick legal dossier resting on his lap.
The door to the private ICU room clicked open softly. A tall, sharply dressed woman in a charcoal-grey tailored suit stepped inside. It was Eleanor Vance—Marcus’s cousin and one of the most ruthless family law and corporate litigation attorneys in the state of Colorado.
"How is she holding up?" Eleanor whispered, keeping her voice low as she approached the bed and gently brushed a lock of hair away from Emma’s sleeping forehead.
"She woke up briefly an hour ago," Marcus replied, his eyes never leaving the baby. "She asked where Ryan was. I told her the truth—that he hasn't been allowed within five miles of this hospital wing."
Eleanor pulled up a chair, opening her leather briefcase and pulling out a stack of pristine, stapled legal documents. "Good. Because Ryan has been busy digging his own grave while trying to salvage his public image."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, looking up from the dossier. "What did the idiot do now?"
"Damage control," Eleanor smirked bitterly, tapping a stack of printed screenshots against her knee. "Thirty minutes after the ambulance left your house, Ryan posted a tearful, highly orchestrated Instagram video claiming that an 'unexpected medical emergency' had struck his family, thanking his followers for their prayers while conveniently omitting the part where he was drinking scotch in Aspen while his wife bled out on the floor."
"Classic narcissist," Marcus growled softly. "Spinning the narrative before anyone else can break the truth."
"Except this time, he miscalculated," Eleanor said, a triumphant gleam in her eye. "I pulled his digital records, subpoenaed his credit card statements for the weekend, and cross-referenced them with the smart-home logs you downloaded from his security system. Not only did he abandon a high-risk postpartum patient in direct violation of medical discharge instructions, but his public statements contradict the emergency timeline. Furthermore..."
Eleanor leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Under Colorado law, willful abandonment of a dependent spouse and newborn requiring emergency medical intervention constitutes severe domestic neglect. I've already filed an emergency petition for sole temporary custody of Ethan, a strict restraining order barring Ryan from contacting Emma or the baby, and an asset freeze on all joint accounts so he can't liquidate funds to skip the country."
Just then, Emma’s eyelids fluttered open. The grey haze of shock was gone, replaced by a profound, tearful clarity. She turned her head slowly toward Marcus, her lips trembling.
"Marcus..." she whispered, her voice rough and cracked. "Is Ethan... is my baby safe?"
Marcus immediately set the baby down in the hospital bassinet beside her, leaning over so Emma could reach out and touch her son's tiny hand.

"He's right here, Em. Safe, healthy, and never going back to that house," Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion as he gently squeezed her hand.
Emma looked from Marcus to Eleanor, a single tear cutting a clean path down her pale cheek. For the first time in years, the crushing weight in her chest lifted. She wasn't alone anymore.
