Chapter 19 - Peace on the Harbor

Three weeks later, Port Mercer was quiet.
The threat of Colonel Vance’s rogue network had been permanently dismantled, his offshore accounts frozen by federal task forces acting on encrypted data packets provided anonymously by Roman’s intelligence network.
Thomas had been safely relocated to a private, high-security recovery facility in the Swiss Alps, where he could finish his rehabilitation program under absolute protection and comfort, financed entirely by a blind trust managed by Roman’s legal team.
And Nora?
She no longer carried a tray of Barolo across a crowded dining room floor.
She sat at her expansive desk in the penthouse loft, her fingers gliding across her monitors, managing the secure digital infrastructure of an empire that spanned three continents.
Roman walked into the study, setting two cups of dark roast coffee on the edge of her desk before leaning down to place a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
“You’ve been staring at those security logs for four hours,” Roman noted, a faint, affectionate smile touching his lips.
“I’m just verifying the port firewall updates,” Nora replied, leaning back and looking up at him. “Even the best digital architecture needs constant maintenance.”
“True,” Roman murmured, pulling up a chair and sitting beside her. “Though I was hoping you might take a break. I’ve acquired a historic downtown building near the waterfront. I was thinking of opening a private dining club. Something exclusive. No tourists, no corrupt managers, and a strict policy against anyone insulting the staff in foreign languages.”
Nora laughed—a bright, genuine sound that echoed warmly through the expansive loft.
“And who is going to manage the front-of-house logistics, Mr. Vale?” she teased, tilting her head.
“I had a specific former military linguist in mind,” Roman said, his pale eyes softening with deep, unyielding devotion. “Provided her salary demands aren't too exorbitant.”

Nora smiled, sliding her hand across the desk to intertwine her fingers with his.
“Her terms are non-negotiable,” Nora whispered softly. “Lifelong contract. Unlimited coffee. And absolute veto power over anyone who orders the wrong wine.”
