Chapter 5 - THE GATHERING STORMThe blizzard outside raged with an unyielding fury, howling against the reinforced windows of the Moretti estate like a pack of starving wolves. Downstairs, the bodies of Victor’s enforcers had been swiftly and quietly secured by loyal security personnel who remained faithful to Lorenzo and the old Don.

Upstairs in Room 4B, the atmosphere was entirely different.
Giovanni Moretti sat upright in his wheelchair, wrapped in the heated blanket I had bought him with my tips. The color had returned slightly to his weathered cheeks, and his piercing eyes tracked every movement as Lorenzo and I entered the room.
I pushed the wheelchair slightly closer to the fireplace, adjusting his collar with the same tender care I had shown him on my very first day here.
"Good evening, Giovanni," I whispered, smiling softly.
The old Don raised a trembling, scarred hand and lightly brushed the back of his fingers against my wrist, right over the fading bruise left by Mrs. Gable. A low, gravelly sound escaped his lips—a sound that sounded remarkably like a protective purr.
Lorenzo pulled up a leather chair and sat opposite his father, placing the leather-bound ledger and Uncle Victor’s files on the small wooden table between them.
"Uncle Victor is massing his men at the eastern gate," Lorenzo said, his voice entirely calm, cold, and calculated. "He thinks we're isolated. He thinks he can storm the manor, eliminate us, and forge my father's signature on the inheritance transfer before sunrise."
Giovanni’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He tapped his index finger twice against the wooden armrest of his wheelchair—an old, familiar signal from the days when he ruled the East Coast underworld with an iron fist.
Lorenzo nodded, understanding the silent command instantly. "Yes, Father. I’ve already contacted the Federal Strike Force and our loyal district attorney. The encrypted files we seized from Gable’s desk contain every bank transfer, every shipping manifest, and every witness statement needed to put Victor away for the rest of his life."
"And us?" I asked quietly, looking between father and son. "What happens to us once Victor is dealt with?"
Lorenzo turned his gaze toward me, the cold, ruthless mafia heir melting away to reveal a deep, unwavering sincerity. He reached across the table and gently took my hand, his thumb tracing the palm of my hand where years of hard labor had left calluses.
"You are not an outsider anymore, Chloe," Lorenzo said softly. "My father’s decree stands. You and Lily are part of this family now. And a Moretti always protects their own—at any cost."
Suddenly, the estate’s main power grid flickered and died.

The roaring fireplace cast long, dancing shadows across the bedroom walls as emergency backup generators kicked in with a low, rhythmic hum. Downstairs, the heavy oak front doors groaned under the impact of a battering ram.
Victor Moretti had arrived.
