Chapter 4 - THE DAWN OF RETRIBUTIONAt 6:45 AM the next morning, Silver City was blanketed in a thick morning fog.

Outside the headquarters of Cross Construction—a slick, glass-faced building in the financial district—a fleet of marked Federal Bureau of Investigation vehicles, IRS Criminal Investigation vans, and Military Police transports pulled up, blocking all exits.
Tristan arrived in his brand-new silver sports car, wearing a wrinkled suit from the night before. His eyes were bloodshot, and he was frantically speaking on his phone.
"I don't care, Dad!" Tristan yelled into the phone as he got out of his car. "We just need to transfer the funds to the offshore account before 8:00 AM! If the military board inspects the accounts—"
"Mr. Tristan Vance-Cross?"
Tristan froze.
Standing on the front steps of his company building was a tall, sharp-looking woman holding a thick stack of federal warrants, flanked by four federal agents with weapons holstered at their hips. Behind her stepped out my father and me, flanked by Commander Vance.
Tristan’s phone slid out of his hand and smashed onto the pavement.
"What... what is this?" Tristan stammered, looking around frantically as federal agents began carrying boxes of files and computer hard drives out of his building's front doors. "You can't be here! This is private property!"
"Not anymore," Eleanor Vance said, stepping down the stairs. "Under Title 18 of the United States Code, all assets belonging to Cross Construction and its senior executives are currently seized under a federal asset forfeiture warrant."
"Seized?!" Tristan screamed, his voice cracking. "On what grounds?!"
"Fraud, forgery, illegal wire transfers, grand larceny, and conspiracy to defraud the United States Government," Eleanor said calmly. "And personally for you, Tristan... aggravated identity theft against Miss Maisie Evans."
Tristan looked at me, his eyes wide with desperate rage. "Maisie! What did you do?! You set me up! You bitter little bitch!"
SLAP!
The sound echoed off the glass walls of the building.
It wasn't my father who had slapped him. It was Mara.
Tristan’s mother had just arrived in her luxury SUV, watching in horror as federal agents placed yellow tape around the building. She ran over, striking her son across the face.
"You idiot!" Mara shrieked, hysterical. "The federal investigators just raided our house! They took the jewelry, the cars, the bank accounts! They found the secret ledgers in your safe, Tristan! You told me you had everything under control!"
"Mom, shut up!" Tristan panicked, trying to cover her mouth. "Don't say anything without a lawyer!"
"It's too late for a lawyer, Mr. Cross," an FBI Special Agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Tristan Vance-Cross, you are under arrest."
"No! Get your hands off me!" Tristan fought back, kicking and flailing as the cuffs were slapped around his wrists. "Do you know who my father is?! Do you know who I am?!"
My father walked forward slowly. He stood directly in front of Tristan. The contrast was stark: Tristan, covered in expensive clothes, sobbing and shaking in handcuffs; my father, wearing a simple flannel shirt, standing tall, proud, and calm.
My father leaned in, looking Tristan straight in the eye.
"You said yesterday that you would never marry the daughter of a gardener," my father said softly. "You were right, Tristan. My daughter deserved a man. And you... are nothing."
The agent shoved Tristan into the back of the police transport.
As the doors slammed shut, Tristan’s mother collapsed onto the sidewalk, sobbing into her designer coat that was about to be repossessed by the government.

I took a deep breath of the morning air. But as I looked at the chaotic scene, Eleanor Vance leaned over to me and whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Maisie... this isn't over yet. We just cracked Tristan's safe. There's something in those ledgers that wasn't supposed to be there. Something about your mother's death fifteen years ago."
