Chapter 4 - The House of GlassWhen I woke up, the smell of antiseptic had replaced the stench of mold and copper.

I wasn't in the damp basement anymore. I was lying in a private, high-security recovery suite at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. The room was bathed in the soft, golden light of dawn filtering through bulletproof glass. Beside my bed, resting in a clear acrylic bassinet, my daughter was sleeping peacefully, swaddled in a pink blanket embroidered with a military crest.

"She hasn't made a peep for two hours," a deep, warm voice said from the corner of the room.

General Sterling sat in a leather armchair, wearing a simple civilian button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes hinting that he hadn't slept at all.

"Dad..." My voice came out as a dry croak.

Sterling was by my side in an instant, pouring a cup of water and holding the straw to my lips with infinite care. "Easy, sweetheart. Don't strain yourself. The doctors say you're going to make a full recovery, though it will take time."

"Marcus..." I whispered, the name tasting like ash in my mouth. "What happened to Marcus?"

Sterling's expression hardened instantly, the warmth vanishing to reveal the cold, calculating strategist beneath.

"Marcus Vance is currently residing in a military brig three floors beneath us," Sterling said calmly. "Along with his mother. And as it turns out, Marcus’s crimes extend far beyond what he did to you in that basement."

He reached over and picked up a thick manila folder resting on the bedside table, tossing it gently onto my blanket.

"For the past three years, Captain Vance has been working as a financial acquisitions officer for a defense contractor," Sterling explained, leaning back in his chair. "He thought he was clever. He embezzled over four million dollars from classified black-budget accounts to fund his lavish lifestyle, his mistress, and the very home he trapped you in."

I stared at the folder, my mind racing. "How did you... how did you find me? I thought my phone call didn't go through."

"It didn't go through to standard cell towers," Sterling replied with a faint, grim smile. "Your backup phone was routed through an encrypted military satellite channel that I had installed on all family devices when you went off-grid to marry him. The moment your phone connected to that relay with the audio recording and the GPS coordinates, the system auto-flagged it as a high-priority distress signal. I happened to be in the area visiting regional command, and we executed a dynamic entry within twenty minutes."

"He thought no one would ever look for me," I whispered, tears welling in my eyes. "He told everyone I ran away."

"He miscalculated," Sterling said softly, standing up and walking over to the window to look out over the city skyline. "He forgot that when you cage a wolf's daughter, the pack doesn't just wait by the door. They tear down the house."
