Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE'S SHADOWOutside, the rain had started again—a cold, driving downpour that turned the industrial street into a mirror of slick black asphalt.

As Julian’s black armored Maybach glided up to the curb, one of the guards held a wide umbrella over our heads. The contrast between the squalor of The Rusted Crown and the opulence of the vehicle was jarring, but to me, it felt like stepping out of a dark tunnel and back into the sun.

I slid into the plush leather interior, letting the seat heater warm my chilled bones. Julian climbed in beside me, closing the door with a heavy, satisfying thud that completely shut out the sounds of the city.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked, his voice losing its terrifying edge, replaced by an intimate, fierce concern. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing away the streak of wood-dust from my cheek. "Did he hurt you?"

"My pride took a minor hit," I said, leaning into his touch. "My ribs are fine. Your timing, however, was dramatic to a fault."

Julian smirked, pulling a small gold lighter from his vest pocket and turning it over in his fingers. "I had to let him sweat for a minute. A man like that needs to understand the exact moment his universe collapses. Otherwise, the lesson doesn't stick."

"He thought I was still broken," I murmured, watching the neon lights of the city streak across the tinted window. "Five years ago, I walked out of that apartment with nothing. I thought the world was divided into people who hurt and people who watch."

"And now?" Julian asked softly, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and pulling me against his chest.

"Now I know," I said, closing my eyes as the car accelerated into the night. "Some people build cages. And some people own the zoo."

Back at the bar, the doors had just unlatched. Colin stumbled out into the pouring rain, soaked, phone dead, career destroyed, crying into the empty street. But we were already miles away, heading toward a fortress of glass and steel where the past couldn't reach us anymore—or so we thought.
