Chapter 2 - THE WAKE-UP CALL AND THE EVIDENCE VAULTWhen I opened my eyes again, the sterile, blinding white of the hospital room felt like a physical blow. The rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor was the only sound anchoring me to reality. My throat felt like it was coated in ash, and every breath burned my lungs.

"Easy now. Don't try to move too fast."
A gentle, weathered hand rested on my arm. I turned my head slowly on the stiff pillow to find Detective Marcus Vance standing beside my bed. He had sharp, intelligent eyes and a notebook clutched tightly in his hand. He wasn't wearing a uniform; he looked like a man who hadn't slept in days.
"Detective... my baby?" My voice came out as a fragile, agonizing whisper.
Detective Vance's expression softened, though a grim shadow remained in his eyes. "Your baby is fighting, Mrs. Hayes. Miraculously, the child has a heartbeat. But you were rushed into emergency surgery the moment you arrived. The doctors are doing everything they can to keep the baby stable, but the next forty-eight hours are critical."
A wave of intense relief washed over me, instantly choked by a surge of overwhelming dread. "Are they... are they arrested?"
Vance pulled up a chair and sat down, opening his leather-bound notebook. "Arthur and Eleanor are both locked in holding cells at the county precinct. Bail has been denied. But what they thought was a private nightmare behind closed doors was captured in 4K resolution."
He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a heavy manila folder, placing it gently on the bedside table.

"Your neighbor, Mr. Henderson, across the street, had a security camera system with a high-zoom thermal lens angled directly toward your driveway and side garage door," Vance explained, his voice hardening. "Not only did he call 911 the moment he saw the red-hot iron bar, but he handed us six months' worth of digital footage. Every single night. Every cigarette burn. Every malicious word Eleanor whispered into Arthur's ear while planning your murder."
I stared at the folder, tears silently spilling over my lashes and soaking into the hospital pillow. The undeniable proof of my torture sat right there, sealed inside paper, waiting to destroy the monsters who had tried to bury me.
