Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

"DROP YOUR WEAPONS! FEDERAL ARMED POLICE!"
The deafening roar echoed off the concrete walls. Through the billow of smoke and dust, a tactical team clad in black SWAT gear swarmed the sub-basement, their assault rifles leveled directly at Victoria and Marcus.
At the front of the unit stood a woman in a mud-splattered trench coat, her hair wild, her eyes wilder.
My breath caught in my throat.
"Mom?" I cried out.
It was Clara. But she didn't look like the tired woman from the apartment. She moved with terrifying, cold precision, holding a heavy-duty override tablet in one hand and a service pistol in the other.
"Marcus, drop the girl or your head will be painted across this wall," Clara commanded, her voice cutting through the industrial noise with absolute authority.
Marcus panicked, his grip loosening on my collar. I kicked backward with all my might, catching him squarely in the shins. He cursed and dropped me. I scrambled across the floor, diving safely behind a concrete pillar.
"Clara?" Victoria stared at her former lead researcher, her face draining of all color. "How... how did you find this place? Your memory wipe was permanent! You were supposed to be washing dishes in a slum!"
"Memory wipes fade when the neural trigger is activated by the exact property where the crime took place, Victoria," Clara said, stepping forward, her eyes locked on her former boss with a murderous intensity. "You stole my daughter. You stole my life. And you thought you could burn the evidence."
Victoria cast a desperate glance at Marcus, who was already dropping his weapon and raising his hands as three laser sights locked onto his chest.
"Marcus, shoot her!" Victoria screamed.
Marcus didn't move. He simply shook his head. "I'm not doing life for you, Victoria. It's over."
Victoria’s face twisted in rage. She lunged toward the control panel on the wall, slamming her palm down on the emergency manual override button.
ALARM! GAS PURGE ACTIVATED. SEALING ALL EXITS.
The heavy steel bulkheads slammed down around the perimeter of the sub-basement, cutting off the SWAT team at the entrance. Only Clara, Victoria, Marcus, Nathaniel (still tied to his chair), and I were trapped inside the burning chamber as the automated methane countdown began ticking loudly over the intercom: T-MINUS 45 SECONDS.
"If I don't get the trust, nobody does!" Victoria shrieked maniacally, pulling a small silver detonator from her jacket pocket. "We all burn together!"
She pressed the main activation button.
The ground beneath us violently shuddered. Sparks rained down from the ceiling as overhead electrical conduits exploded in showers of blue fire.

Clara didn't hesitate. Ignoring the falling debris, she sprinted across the shaking floor, vaulted over a control console, and tackled Victoria hard to the ground just as the detonator flew from her hand.
The two women tumbled across the concrete, trading blows in a furious struggle for survival as the countdown blared overhead: T-MINUS 20 SECONDS... 19... 18...
