Chapter 4 - The Cell Block Confession

Back in New York, the rain lashed against the reinforced glass of the Manhattan Detention Complex. The gray concrete walls smelled of bleach, damp wool, and institutional despair.

David Sterling sat on a bolted metal bench inside the holding cell, wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. In less than forty-eight hours, his entire world had evaporated. His father was dead, buried in a modest plot because the family accounts had been entirely frozen. His sister Megan had fled to Florida to stay with a distant aunt, refusing to answer David’s calls. And David himself sat facing three counts of corporate fraud, conspiracy, and securities manipulation, facing a mandatory prison sentence of no less than ten years.

The heavy steel door clanked open. A guard in a navy uniform tapped his baton against the bars.

"Sterling! Visitor in Booth 3. You’ve got ten minutes."

David didn't want to move. His limbs felt like lead. But hoping against all irrational hope that somehow—miraculously—it might be Catherine, offering a lifeline, a shred of mercy, he dragged himself up and shuffled toward the visitation booths.

He sat down in the plastic molded chair and picked up the heavy black telephone receiver.

On the other side of the thick bulletproof glass sat Allison Vance.

She wasn't wearing designer makeup or a high-end Gucci coat anymore. She wore an orange jumpsuit identical to his, her hair pulled back into a greasy, unwashed ponytail, her face bruised by the raw, unfiltered reality of a holding cell brawl she had lost the night before.

David pressed the receiver to his ear, his hand shaking with a rage so white-hot it tasted like copper.

"You," David hissed through the intercom speaker, his voice a venomous rasp. "You are the reason I am in here. You destroyed my life."

Allison let out a harsh, broken laugh that sounded like dry glass breaking. She pressed her face close to the glass, her eyes wild and bloodshot.

"I destroyed your life?!" Allison screamed back through the speaker, her voice tinny and distorted. "You arrogant, narcissistic monster! You only wanted me because I was a trophy incubator for your precious family name! You never loved me! You didn't even love Catherine! You only love yourself and the reflection of your own ego in the mirror!"

"Shut up!" David slammed his fist against the glass, causing the guard outside to step forward with a sharp warning tap. "You lied about a baby! You faked a pregnancy! You drove me to ruin everything!"

"I gave you what you wanted to hear, David!" Allison snarled, tears of pure fury leaking from her eyes. "You wanted a son so badly you were blind to reality! You ignored every red flag because your pride was more important than the truth! You deserve this cell! You deserve every single second of this!"

She slammed her receiver down onto the cradle, cutting the connection with a sharp buzz, and stood up as the guards grabbed her arms and dragged her back toward the cell block.

David sat frozen in the booth, the dead dial tone humming in his ear.

He looked at his own reflection in the thick glass partition. The man staring back at him was broken, defeated, and utterly alone.

He had spent his whole life looking down on everyone else—treating his wife like a servant, his employees like disposable tools, and his family name like an invincible shield. Now, stripped of his money, his status, and his lies, he was nothing.

And as the guard unlocked the door to pull him back to his cell, David whispered into the empty air the name he had tried so hard to forget:

Catherine.
