Chapter 4 - THE CHESSBOARD OF BEASTSThe air inside the Vance Estate's grand ballroo

m was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, Cuban cigars, and old money. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the hundreds of billionaires, politicians, and foreign dignitaries who had gathered for the annual Winter Charity Gala.

At the center of the room, standing on a raised glass platform, was Arthur Vance. He looked immaculate in a midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a crystal glass of scotch. But beneath his calm exterior, his eyes were twitching, scanning the crowd constantly.

"Is the perimeter secure?" Arthur muttered into a tiny earpiece concealed beneath his collar.

"Sir, we have sixty armed operatives guarding every exit, entry point, and ventilation shaft," his security chief responded instantly. "The warehouse team lost them last night, but there is no way she can get within a mile of this estate. Furthermore, the local police are on standby to arrest her for trespassing and corporate espionage if she shows her face."

Arthur let out a breath, relaxing his shoulders. "Excellent. Bring out the contracts. Let’s finish this."

A group of foreign investors in sharp gray suits stepped onto the platform, carrying a leather-bound folder containing the asset transfer papers. If Arthur signed these tonight, billions of dollars would move across the ocean, out of Clara’s reach forever.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced into a microphone, his voice dripping with charm. "Tonight, we don't just celebrate charity. We celebrate a new era for Vance Enterprises. An era of global expansion, leaving the tragedies of the past behind us."

He took a gold pen from his pocket, unscrewing the cap. He lowered the pen to the signature line.

"I wouldn't sign that if I were you, Uncle."

The voice didn't come from a microphone. It came from the top of the grand, sweeping marble staircase at the back of the ballroom.

The entire crowd turned as one.

Standing at the top of the stairs was a woman who looked like she had just stepped off a Parisian runway. She was wearing a breathtaking, emerald-green silk gown that flowed around her like liquid gold. Her hair was styled in an elegant, sophisticated updo, held together by a diamond hairpiece that caught every ray of light in the room. Her makeup was flawless, hiding the cut on her cheek perfectly.

She walked down the stairs with slow, deliberate, and majestic grace, completely unbothered by the fact that she was stepping on a heavily sprained ankle. The sheer willpower required to hide the pain was superhuman.

It was Clara.

Beside her, dressed in a sleek black suit, walked Julian Vance, his hands clasped behind his back, his eyes scanning the security guards who were instantly reaching for their holstered weapons.

"Security!" Arthur shrieked, his mask of sophistication completely shattering. "Arrest them! What are you doing?! Shoot them if you have to!"

"I wouldn't do that, Arthur," Julian said smoothly, raising a small remote control in his hand. "Every television screen, smartphone, and tablet in this room is currently connected to the estate's private network. If a single weapon is drawn, the contents of the flash drive Clara left at the arena last night will be automatically uploaded to the federal database and broadcast live to the stock exchange."

Arthur froze, his pen hovering an inch above the paper. "You're bluffing. That drive was destroyed."

"Was it?" Clara smiled, stepping into the center of the ballroom floor. The wealthy guests parted for her like the Red Sea, completely captivated by her presence. "The drive you destroyed at the arena was a decoy, Arthur. The real data—the flight logs from my mother's plane, the bank transfers you made to the maintenance technician who sabotaged the engines, and the offshore accounts you used to hide the hush money—is right here."

She lifted her left hand, revealing a small, glowing digital device strapped to her wrist.

"You see, Arthur, you forgot one very important thing about my mother," Clara said, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "She didn't just teach me how to skate. She taught me how to survive. She knew you were greedy. She kept a duplicate log of every financial transaction you ever made."

The foreign investors slowly closed their leather folder, stepping away from Arthur as if he were radioactive. "Mr. Vance," the lead investor said coldly, his accent thick. "The deal is suspended until these allegations are thoroughly cleared by the authorities. Good night."

"No! Wait!" Arthur panicked, reaching out for them, but they walked away, leaving him standing completely alone on the raised platform.

The crowd began to whisper loudly, phones clicking as guests took photos of the disgraced billionaire. Arthur’s face turned from pale to a deep, toxic purple. He looked at Clara, his eyes filled with a murderous, unhinged insanity.

"You think you've ruined me?" Arthur hissed, stepping down from the platform. "You have nothing, Clara! You have an old file! My lawyers will tie this up in court for the next thirty years! By the time a judge even looks at that data, you'll be an old woman living in the slums! You can't claim the Vance fortune without the Olympic Trial spot, and the federation registration closed exactly ten minutes ago. You aren't on the list!"

Clara looked at the grand grandfather clock in the corner of the room. It read 8:10 PM.

"You're right, Arthur," Clara said calmly. "The general registration closed at eight o'clock."

She reached into her emerald gown and pulled out a gold-embossed, sealed envelope, throwing it onto the table in front of him.

"But the Legacy Exception clause, created by my mother when she funded the federation's endowment, allows a direct bloodline descendant to register exactly four days before the event, provided they can prove their identity with a DNA match to the founder."

Clara leaned in close, her eyes burning into his soul. "The DNA results came back an hour ago, confirmed by the federal lab. I am officially entered into the World Selection Trials. In four days, I will take the ice. And when I win, the legacy clause automatically triggers a total freeze on all Vance corporate assets, transferring full executive control to me."

Arthur stepped back, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. He realized he was completely cornered. The trap had been snapped shut.

"You... you can't skate," Arthur whispered, his eyes darting down to her emerald gown, trying to see her feet. "Your ankle... I saw the medical report from my spies. You can't even stand without agonizing pain. You'll fail on the ice. You'll fall, and you'll lose everything."

"Then I guess you'll just have to watch me try," Clara said, turning her back on him with absolute contempt.

As she walked away, Julian leaned in close to Arthur, a cold smile on his face. "Oh, and one more thing, brother. The police aren't coming to arrest Clara. They're coming for you."

Sirens wailed in the distance, their red and blue lights reflecting off the grand stained-glass windows of the estate.

Arthur stood frozen as his guests began to flee the house in a panic. But as the flashing lights drew closer, a dark, sinister look crossed his face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, dialing a number he had sworn he would never use again.

"It's me," Arthur whispered into the phone as the front doors began to rattle from the police arrival. "Activate the asset in the athletic federation. Clara cannot be allowed to finish the short program. Do whatever it takes. Break her legs if you have to. Kill her on the ice."
