Chapter 4 - The Kentucky Connection"The Brooks family name?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that echoed off the high ceilings. "You didn't take it back, Mom. You gave it away."

Margaret froze mid-reach, her fingers hovering an inch above the coffee table. "What... what are you talking about?"
I pulled out a second folder from my briefcase—this one containing private investigator reports and public registry documents I had secretly commissioned late last night after noticing the first subtle anomalies in our household spending.
"Do you really think I wouldn't notice half a million dollars vanishing into thin air?" I asked, tossing a glossy photograph onto the glass table right in front of her.
The photo showed an elegant, sunlit country club in Louisville, Kentucky. In the foreground, a silver-haired man wearing an expensive custom-tailored Brioni suit was clinking champagne glasses with Margaret. Beneath them, a bold banner read: Annual Gala for the Brooks-Vanderbilt Estate & Equestrian Club.
Margaret stared at the photograph, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Who is that, Mom?" I asked quietly. "That’s Arthur Vanderbilt, isn't it? The man you’ve been secretly dating for the last two years. The man who managed to run his luxury equestrian ranch straight into bankruptcy last fall."
Emma stared at the photo, then up at Margaret, realization dawning in her wide eyes. "You... you were paying off his debts? You were draining our family savings to bail out your boyfriend?"
"He's a pillar of society!" Margaret shrieked, abandoning all pretense and lunging at the photo to shred it, but I caught her wrists easily, pinning her arms to her sides. "He comes from old money! He fell on hard times! A woman of my standing cannot be seen with a man who is bankrupt! You were supposed to be my successful son—your wealth is our wealth! It belongs to the family!"
"No," I said, my grip tightening just enough to make her wince. "My wealth belongs to my wife and my unborn child. Not to some washed-up equestrian con artist who saw you coming a mile away."

"He loves me!" Margaret wept, the fierce matriarch completely disintegrating into a desperate, pathetic woman. "He promised we would travel to Europe once the ranch was saved! He said I deserved to live like a queen!"
"Well, you can live like a queen with him in Kentucky," I said, releasing her wrists and pointing firmly toward the front door. "Because your flight leaves in four hours, and your access to every single one of my accounts has been permanently revoked."
