Chapter 5 - The Unthinkable BetrayalThe air in the speeding SUV felt suddenly thin, suffocating, and freezing cold.

I stared at the photograph on my phone screen. My thumb hovered over the glass, trembling so violently I could barely keep the screen steady.
Veronica Vance. The federal fugitive. The surrogate-trafficking syndicate mastermind.
And she was sitting casually in a local fertility clinic waiting room six months ago... right next to my husband, Ethan.
“Marshal,” I whispered, my voice sounding hollow, like it was coming from the bottom of a deep well.
“Hang on, Mrs. Miller! We’re taking the perimeter service road shortcut to the tarmac, it’s going to bump hard!” Marshal Vance shouted over the screaming siren.
“Marshal, look at this phone!” I thrust the screen into his face, ignoring the vehicle’s violent bounce as we jumped a concrete curb.
Marshal Vance glanced sideways at the screen, squinted through the dashboard lights, and slammed his foot on the brake so hard the SUV skidded sideways across gravel, coming to a screeching halt fifty yards from the chain-link fence of the private airstrip.
Through the pouring rain, a sleek white-and-silver Gulfstream private jet sat on the tarmac, its twin jet engines whining with a deafening roar, preparing to pivot toward the runway.
“Is that...?” Marshal Vance muttered, staring at the photo.
“That’s Veronica,” I said, my voice dead, devoid of all tears, replaced by a terrifying, hollow calm. “And the man sitting next to her... is my husband. Ethan.”
Marshal Vance’s eyes widened. He grabbed his tactical radio, his expression turning grim. “All units, abort perimeter containment! This isn't just a random hospital kidnapping. We have an inside job. Repeat, the husband, Ethan Miller, is an active co-conspirator in the Vance trafficking syndicate!”
The pieces clicked together in my mind with terrifying clarity.
That was why Ethan had looked at our baby and immediately shouted that she wasn't his. It wasn't because he suspected me of cheating.
He knew.
He knew there were twins. He had planned the entire operation with Veronica. He knew one baby was scheduled to be smuggled out of the hospital for a massive black-market payout while the other was left behind to cover their tracks. His explosive rage, his fake DNA demands, his public humiliation of me in the delivery room—it was all a calculated theatrical performance designed to create total chaos, distract the nurses, and buy Veronica the crucial ten minutes she needed to walk out of the front doors with our second daughter.
He didn't think I cheated on him. He wanted me to look like the guilty party so no one would ever suspect him.
“The bastard,” I whispered, staring through the rain at the private jet. “The absolute, soulless bastard.”

“Mrs. Miller, stay inside the vehicle,” Marshal Vance ordered, drawing his sidearm. “We’re breaching the tarmac now.”
Before the marshal could open his door, I pushed mine open, stepped straight out into the freezing Missouri rain, and started running toward the fence.
