CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO BURIED THE TRUTH
Sophia’s father, Richard Vale, suddenly stood up.
“Security. Remove her. Now.”
But Ethan raised his hand.
“No one touches her.”
The entire church went silent.
The homeless woman’s lips trembled as she opened the silver pocket watch. Inside was a tiny photograph of a young woman holding a baby boy.
Ethan stared at it.
That baby was him.
His voice cracked.
“Where did you get this?”
The old woman whispered, “From your mother… the night she begged me to save you.”
Sophia stepped back.
“My father said your mother died in a fire.”
The old woman turned slowly toward Richard.
“No. She didn’t die in the fire.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You crazy old woman.”
But then she pulled out one more thing.
A hospital bracelet.
Faded. Yellowed. But the name was still visible.
Ethan Carter.
And beneath it was another name.
Mother: Margaret Vale.
Sophia gasped.
“Vale…?”
The guests began whispering.
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Why does my birth record have your family name on it?”
Richard tried to laugh, but his voice shook.
“This is nonsense.”
Then the old woman pointed at Sophia’s mother.
“She knows too.”
Sophia’s mother dropped her glass.
The sound cracked through the church like a gunshot.
Ethan felt the world spinning.
The woman he was about to marry was not just connected to his past.
Her family had been hiding it.
For twenty-six years.
Then the old woman said the sentence that destroyed the wedding completely.
“Ethan… Sophia is not your bride.”
Everyone froze.
“She is your half-sister.”
Sophia screamed.
Ethan stumbled backward, ripping the wedding ring from his hand.
Richard shouted, “Enough!”
But it was too late.
The church doors suddenly opened.
Two police officers walked in.
Behind them was a woman in a wheelchair, her face scarred by fire, her eyes filled with tears.
Ethan couldn’t breathe.
The old woman stepped aside and whispered:
“Your mother is alive.”
And the woman in the wheelchair looked at Ethan and said:
“My son… I’m sorry I couldn’t come back sooner.”
