CHAPTER 3: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

"My son..."
The scarred woman in the wheelchair reached toward Ethan with trembling hands.
Tears streamed down Ethan's face.
"No... that's impossible."
Twenty-six years ago, he had stood beside a coffin carrying his mother's name. He had watched it lowered into the ground. He had believed she was gone forever.
Yet here she was.
Alive.
Sophia slowly backed away, unable to process what she was seeing.
Her father, Richard Vale, looked terrified for the first time in his life.
"You shouldn't be here," he muttered.
The woman smiled bitterly.
"You made one mistake, Richard."
"You never checked if I was truly dead."
The church erupted with whispers.
Journalists rushed toward the front, cameras flashing nonstop.
Richard suddenly shouted, "She's lying! Arrest her!"
But before anyone moved, one of the detectives stepped forward.
"No one is leaving."
He held up a thick case file.
"We reopened the fire investigation three months ago."
Richard's face drained of color.
The detective continued.
"The body buried twenty-six years ago wasn't Margaret Carter."
Gasps echoed through the cathedral.
"It belonged to another woman whose identity had been hidden."
Ethan felt his knees weaken.
"So... who started the fire?"
The detective slowly turned toward Richard.
"We believe someone wanted Margaret dead because she had discovered millions of dollars had been stolen from the Vale Foundation."
Sophia stared at her father.
"Dad..."
Richard avoided her eyes.
"No..."
"Tell me they're wrong."
He remained silent.
Margaret finally spoke.
"I found documents proving Richard had stolen charity money and laundered it through shell companies. I planned to expose everything."
"But the night before I could go to the police..."
"...our house exploded."
She touched the scars on her face.
"I survived."
"But Richard told everyone I had died."
Ethan clenched his fists.
"You let me grow up believing my mother abandoned me?"
Richard laughed coldly.
"No."
"I let you believe she was dead."
"Because dead people can't testify."
The entire church fell silent.
Then Sophia whispered the question no one dared ask.
"If Ethan isn't my fiancé..."
"...then why did you approve our marriage?"
Richard looked at her with empty eyes.
"Because if you married him..."
"...every share of the Carter family fortune would legally belong to the Vale family."
The truth hit everyone at once.
This wedding had never been about love.
It had been the final step in a twenty-six-year conspiracy.
Just then...
A loud voice came from the back of the church.
"Don't believe everything Richard says."
An elderly man in an expensive black suit walked inside, escorted by two federal agents.
He placed a sealed envelope into Ethan's hands.
"Your mother only told you half the truth."
Ethan opened it.
Inside was his original birth certificate.
He looked down...
...and froze.
The name listed under Father wasn't Richard.
It wasn't the man who had raised him.
It wasn't anyone he had ever heard of.
Instead, it read:
FATHER: JONATHAN BLACKWOOD
The billionaire founder of the most powerful corporation in the country.
A man who had officially died fifteen years earlier.
Margaret covered her mouth in horror.
"No..."
"That can't be..."
The old homeless woman whispered one final sentence before collapsing to the floor.
"He never died..."
"...and he's been watching all of you."
