Within forty-eight hours, the Santos family’s luxurious world had utterly disintegrated.

Because I had frozen every single account, Mark couldn't even afford to hire a top-tier lawyer. He had to settle for a public defender who looked exhausted just looking at the mountain of evidence Arthur had compiled.

The news of Mark’s embezzlement leaked to the corporate community. I made sure of it. As CFO, I filed formal corporate fraud charges against him. The police raided Samantha Cruz’s newly acquired BGC condo, seizing the Mercedes and freezing the shell corporation’s assets.

I received a frantic phone call from an unknown number on Thursday evening. I answered, only to hear Mark’s broken voice on the other end.

"Elena... please," he begged, sounding completely stripped of the arrogance he possessed just days prior. "Samantha left me. The moment the accounts were frozen and the car was towed, she packed her bags and blocked my number. She was only using me, Elena. I see that now."

"And you were only using me, Mark," I replied, sitting in my quiet hotel suite while Lily colored in a book nearby.

"Please don't do this," he wept. "My mother is sixty-five years old. If she goes to jail for child endangerment, she won't survive it. And I’m facing up to ten years for corporate fraud. We have no money, Elena. Chloe had to drop out of her master's program because her tuition check bounced. We're ruined."

"You should have thought about that before you gave my daughter a piece of stale bread and locked her in the cold," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

"I was stupid! I was weak!" he cried. "But we’re a family, Elena! Think about Lily! Do you want her father to be a convicted felon?"
