Chapter 4 - THE SWISS STRATAGEM

Secrets in the VaultThe arrival of Arthur Hawthorne turned a messy divorce into an all-out corporate war. Arthur wasn't like his weak, spoiled son or his arrogant wife. He was a seasoned political fixer with deep ties to the judiciary and law enforcement.
Within twenty-four hours of landing in Virginia, Arthur executed his counter-attack:
He had a high-court judge suspend the freezing order on the family's primary real estate holdings based on a legal loophole.
He filed an emergency ex-parte petition alleging Evelyn had kidnapped Lily and was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, backed by a falsified psychiatric evaluation signed by a bought-and-paid-for doctor.
He leaked fake stories to the media framing Evelyn as a gold-digging grifter who had staged the entire legal assault to extort the family out of millions.
At 8:00 A.M. on Thursday, Marcus Vance barged into the safe house where Evelyn was staying. His face was grave.
"Evelyn, we have a massive problem," Marcus said, laying a thick stack of court summonses on the desk. "Arthur managed to get a judge to sign an emergency pickup order for Lily. Child Protective Services is en route with local police right now to enforce it. They are going to take your daughter."
Evelyn felt her blood turn to ice. "On what grounds?!"
"Postpartum psychosis," Marcus explained grimly. "Arthur produced medical records from the hospital where you gave birth. They claim you showed signs of severe detachment and dangerous hallucinations. It's forged, but until we can prove it in court next month, they have the legal right to take Lily today."
Evelyn didn't panic. Panic was a luxury for people who had a safety net.
"Where is Arthur right now?" she asked, her voice dangerously sharp.
"He's at the Hawthorne Tower downtown, hosting a press conference to announce his grand return and clear his family's name," Marcus replied.
Evelyn stood up, picked up a second, smaller flash drive from her purse—one that hadn't been in the green folder—and looked Marcus dead in the eye.
"Call the news networks," Evelyn said softly. "Tell them there's going to be a special guest at that press conference."
Thirty minutes later, the grand ballroom of the Hawthorne International Headquarters was packed with journalists, news cameras, and high-society reporters. Arthur Hawthorne stood behind a golden podium, looking calm, authoritative, and utterly in control.
"My family has recently been the victim of an unprovoked, malicious extortion attempt by an unstable individual," Arthur announced smoothly into the array of microphones. "We love Evelyn, and we pray she gets the mental health treatment she so desperately needs. But our priority is, and always will be, the safety of my baby granddaughter, Lily..."
"Then why did you put a three-million-dollar life insurance policy on her the day she was born, Arthur?"
A collective gasp echoed across the auditorium.
The crowd parted as Evelyn walked down the central aisle. She was flanked by two federal agents from the Department of Justice.
Arthur’s calm facade cracked for a fraction of a second, his eyes flashing with raw fury. "Security! Remove this woman! She is mentally unfit!"
"Don't move," one of the DOJ agents warned the security team, flashing a federal badge. "This is an active federal investigation."
Evelyn walked right up to the stage, staring up at the man who had controlled her life for five years.
"You thought I only went after Preston's petty offshore accounts," Evelyn said, her voice amplified through the hall's sound system. "You thought you were safe because your real wealth was hidden in the Helvetic Trust in Zurich."
Arthur’s face flushed blood red. "Shut your mouth!"
"I didn't just find the trust, Arthur," Evelyn continued smoothly, turning to face the wall of news cameras. "I found who the real beneficiary is. It isn't Preston. It isn't your daughter. It's a woman named Elena Rostova—the daughter of the Russian oligarch you illegally laundered fifty million dollars for during the 2018 real estate development deal."
The press room exploded into pure chaos. Camera flashes flared like lightning. Journalists shouted over one another, shoving microphones forward.

Arthur staggered backward, catching himself on the edge of the podium. "You... you couldn't possibly know that..."
"I didn't know it," Evelyn whispered, stepping close enough for only him to hear. "Until you tried to take my daughter. Now, the FBI knows it too."
