Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF EMPIRES

Checkmate at MidnightThe storm hit the Virginia mountains hard at midnight. Inside the lodge, the argument between Preston and Arthur had reached a boiling point, with Victoria desperately trying to mediate between her husband and son.

"You're a monster, Dad!" Preston shrieked, swinging the fireplace poker wildly. "I gave up everything for this family! I treated Evelyn like trash because YOU told me she wasn't good enough for us! And all the while, you were planning to send me to prison!"

"You treated her like trash because you're a weak, pathetic boy who needed someone to step on!" Arthur spat back, stepping right up to Preston. "You couldn't run the business! You couldn't handle your marriage! You're nothing without my money!"

Suddenly, red and blue strobe lights cut through the dense mountain fog outside the lodge windows. The sharp, deafening wail of federal sirens echoed through the valley.

“THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION!” a voice boomed over a loudspeaker. “ARTHUR HAWTHORNE, PRESTON HAWTHORNE, STEP OUTSIDE WITH YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEADS! THE BUILDING IS SURROUNDED!”

Victoria screamed, dropping to her knees. "No! Oh God, no!"

Arthur sprinted toward the back exit, but the heavy oak door was kicked inward with a violent crash. Tactical officers in tactical gear flooded into the kitchen, weapons raised.

"DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"

Arthur was tackled to the floor, his face slammed against the cold wood. Preston dropped the iron poker, falling to his knees with his hands over his face, sobbing uncontrollably like a terrified child.

Within minutes, all three Hawthornes were cuffed and dragged out into the pouring rain.

Standing beside the lead FBI vehicle, holding a large black umbrella, was Evelyn.

As the officers marched Preston past her, he stopped. His clothes were soaked, his hair matted to his forehead, his wrists bound tightly in steel handcuffs. He looked at the woman he had dismissed at 4:30 A.M. in a dim kitchen just four days ago.

"Evelyn..." Preston whimpered, his voice cracking. "Please... talk to them. Tell them it was a mistake. We're family. We have a child together!"

Evelyn stepped closer, holding the umbrella over herself and baby Lily, who was wrapped safely against her chest in a warm blanket.

She looked at Preston with neither hatred nor anger—only a cold, absolute indifference that cut deeper than any knife.

"We were never a family, Preston," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying clearly over the sound of the rain. "You were just a lesson I had to survive."

"Evelyn, please!" Victoria shrieked from the back of a police cruiser. "Think of the family name!"

"The family name dies tonight, Victoria," Evelyn replied without looking at her.

Arthur was led past her last. Even in handcuffs, the old billionaire tried to hold his head high, glaring at her with venomous hatred. "You think you won, little girl? My lawyers will tie this up in court for ten years. I will spend millions to destroy you."

Evelyn pulled a thin white envelope from her coat pocket and tucked it neatly into Arthur’s wet suit pocket.

"What is that?" Arthur growled.

"That’s a copy of the bankruptcy filing for Hawthorne International," Evelyn said calmly. "Your shareholders discovered the Russian trust two hours ago. They held an emergency board meeting. You’ve been removed as Chairman. The stock crashed ninety-eight percent at the market close. You don't have millions anymore, Arthur. You don't even have enough to pay your bail."

Arthur’s eyes went wide, his posture collapsing completely as the reality hit him. The officers pushed him into the back of the transport van and slammed the heavy doors shut.
