Chapter 3 - THE COLD TRAP

Headline: "She tried to poison me with my husband's own medication. She didn't expect the police to be waiting in my pantry.""POLICE! DON'T MOVE! DROP THE BOTTLE!"
The living room filled with the blinding flash of tactical lights. Two plainclothes detectives, firearms drawn, surged into the room.
Vanessa froze, her hand still hovering over my face, the amber bottle clutched tightly in her fist. Her eyes darted wildy from the detectives to me, then to the hidden camera in the spice rack that she finally noticed.
"Get off her! Now!" Detective Harris roared, grabbing Vanessa by the shoulder and pulling her off me.
She didn't struggle. She let herself be pulled away, her face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. Detective Jenkins stepped into the room, holding a plastic evidence bag. She gently took the amber bottle from Vanessa’s hand.
"Vanessa Miller, you are under arrest for attempted murder, grand larceny, and fraud," Sarah said, her voice echoing in the quiet room.
"This is a setup!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking. "She’s crazy! She attacked me! I was trying to give her her medication!"
"We have it all on video, Vanessa," Sarah said coolly, nodding toward the hidden cameras. "And we heard every word you said. 'Daniel forgot that I control his medication.' That’s a confession on tape."
Vanessa was cuffed and led out of the house. As she passed me, she leaned in, her eyes spitting venom. "You think you’ve won, Claire? You don't know half of it. You’ll never find where the money went. And you’ll never prove what happened to Daniel."
The front door closed, leaving the house in a ringing, heavy silence.
I sat on the sofa, rubbing my sore chest. My heart was racing, but my mind was incredibly clear.
"Are you alright, Claire?" Sarah asked, kneeling beside me.
"I’m fine," I breathed. "Did you get the bottle?"
Sarah held up the amber vial. The label read: Digoxin. It was Daniel’s heart medication. In high doses, it was lethal, causing a fatal arrhythmia that looked exactly like a natural heart attack.
"We’re sending this to the lab immediately," Sarah said. "And I have some news from the courier depot. The woman who dropped off the package with your ring and the note? We pulled the security footage."
"Who was it?" I asked eagerly.
Sarah pulled out her phone and showed me a still image from the security camera. The woman was wearing a large sun hat and sunglasses, but as she turned to leave, she had looked directly at the camera.
I gasped.
It was Evelyn. Vanessa’s mother. My sister-in-law.
"Evelyn?" I whispered. "But why would she help me? She’s always taken Vanessa’s side in everything."
"Maybe she has her own agenda," Sarah suggested. "Or maybe she was afraid Vanessa was going to drag her down too. We’re bringing Evelyn in for questioning tonight."
"No," I said, standing up. "Don't bring her in yet. If Evelyn is playing a double game, she’ll close up if she sees badges. Let me talk to her first. She doesn't know Vanessa’s been arrested yet."
"Claire, that’s dangerous," Sarah warned.
"I’ll bring Martin with me. She won't do anything stupid with a lawyer present. And besides, I want to look her in the eyes when I ask her why she let her daughter poison my husband."
An hour later, Martin and I arrived at Evelyn’s pristine suburban home. The lights were on inside.
I knocked on the door. It opened almost immediately.
Evelyn stood there, holding a glass of white wine. She looked exhausted, the skin around her eyes dark and hollow. When she saw me, her hand began to tremble, the wine sloshing against the glass.
"Claire," she whispered. "What... what are you doing here?"
"I think you know why I’m here, Evelyn," I said, stepping past her into the foyer. Martin followed, closing the door behind us.
"I don't know what you mean," she said, trying to regain her composure, but her voice was shaking.
I pulled the plastic bag containing the anonymous note from my purse and held it up. "The courier depot has high-definition cameras, Evelyn. They got a very clear picture of your face."
Evelyn’s glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the hardwood floor. White wine and shards of glass splattered across her expensive rug. She didn't even look down. She just stared at me, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I’m sorry," she sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "I’m so sorry, Claire. I tried to stop her. I swear I did."
"If you wanted to stop her, why didn't you tell the police?" I demanded, my voice cutting through her tears. "Why didn't you tell me before Daniel died?"
"Because I didn't know!" Evelyn cried, collapsing onto the sofa. "I only found out after he died! I found the Digoxin bottles in Vanessa’s apartment. She... she was bragging about it. She said Daniel was going to cut us both out of his will because he found out she was embezzling from his company."
"His company?" Martin intervened, his lawyer instincts kicking in. "Daniel’s real estate holdings? Vanessa didn't have access to those accounts."
"Yes, she did," Evelyn whispered, looking up with a terrified expression. "She forged his signature on a power of attorney months ago. She’s been draining the corporate accounts. She’s stolen over six hundred thousand dollars, Claire."
My jaw dropped. Six hundred thousand dollars.
"Where is the money, Evelyn?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"She moved it into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands," Evelyn said, shaking. "But she needs one more signature to fully clear it out and close the accounts. She needs your signature on the final estate release. That’s why she was so desperate to get you to sign those papers tonight."
"And what about you, Evelyn?" I asked, stepping closer to her. "What was your part in this?"
Evelyn looked down, her face turning red with shame. "She... she promised to pay off my mortgage. I’m in debt, Claire. Deep debt. She told me if I kept quiet, we’d both be set for life."
"So you traded my husband’s life for a mortgage payment," I said, disgust washing over me.
"No! I couldn't live with it!" Evelyn wept. "That’s why I sent you the ring! I stole it back from her jewelry box while she was sleeping. I wanted you to know the truth without her knowing it was me. I was terrified of her, Claire. She’s... she’s a monster."
"She’s in jail, Evelyn," I said flatly. "She was arrested an hour ago for attempting to poison me."
Evelyn’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with horror. "She tried to poison you too?"
"Yes," I said. "And now, you’re going to help me ensure she never sees the light of day. Because if you don't, I will make sure you are prosecuted as an accessory to murder."
Evelyn nodded frantically. "Anything. I’ll do anything."
"Good," I said, looking at Martin. "Because tomorrow, we’re going to the bank. And we’re going to take back every single penny she stole."
But as Martin and I left Evelyn’s house, my phone buzzed. It was an email alert from Daniel’s primary banking app.
I opened the notification. My heart stopped.
“Transfer Successful: $650,000.00 transferred to VLM Holding Group, Cayman Islands.”

I stared at the screen in disbelief. Vanessa was in jail. Her phone had been confiscated.
Who had just authorized the transfer?
