Chapter 4 - The Midnight Raid

The rain had turned into a full-scale blizzard by midnight, howling across the frozen plains of Minnesota and burying Wayzata in a shroud of white.

I sat alone in my dark study, the glow of my computer monitor casting an eerie blue light across my face. On the screen, a live tracker showed that the encrypted investigative packet containing my mother's financial records, coroner bribes, and corporate cover-ups had successfully been downloaded by federal investigators and three major investigative journalists at the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Suddenly, heavy pounding echoed at the front door. Not a polite knock, but the urgent, battering rhythm of law enforcement.

I stood up and walked down the grand staircase just as Marcus—my faithful secretary who had secretly helped me cross-reference the financial ledgers—unlocked the front door.

Three federal agents in heavy tactical gear, accompanied by two state troopers, strode into the foyer, their boots tracking snow across the pristine marble.

"Dr. Julian Carpenter?" the lead agent asked, flashing a badge.

"Yes," I replied calmly.

"We have a federal warrant for the immediate arrest of Katie Carpenter and corporate seizure of all Crestview Clinic assets under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, alongside charges of manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and witness intimidation."

"She's upstairs in her bedroom," I said without missing a beat.

The agents nodded and surged up the staircase, their heavy tactical boots thundering against the wood. A moment later, muffled shouts echoed from the upper hallway, followed by the sound of handcuffs clicking sharply into place.

Moments later, my mother was dragged down the stairs. Her St. John suit was rumpled, her hair disheveled, and her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. As she passed me, she spat directly onto my shoes.

"You ungrateful, treacherous bastard!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I built this empire for you! I made you who you are!"

"No, Mother," I said softly, looking down at her with absolute pity. "You built a prison. And now you're going to live in it."

As the squad cars peeled away into the blinding snowstorm, leaving red and blue lights flashing against the frozen windows, Olivia crept down the stairs, wrapped in a blanket, looking utterly defeated.

"What happens to us now?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

"There is no 'us,' Olivia," I said, turning to face her. "Tomorrow morning, I am filing for an emergency annulment based on fraud and conspiracy. Every asset I own is being liquidated and transferred into a newly established trust fund managed exclusively by Nellie Fields."

Olivia stared at me in horror. "You're giving everything away? To a homeless beggar?"

"She isn't a beggar, Olivia," I said, grabbing my heavy wool coat from the rack. "She is the only real victim in this nightmare. And I am going to spend the rest of my life making sure she never has to sleep under a bridge again."
