Chapter 6 - THE PHANTOM OF MILANSix months after the first snowfall, the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of late spring. The dark clouds that had hung over Graybridge seemed to have finally parted.

I had officially stepped into a new role—not as a hostage, nor as a mere nanny, but as the Director of the newly established Elena Moretti Children’s Foundation, a charity organization funded by Adrian’s legitimate corporate holdings to help displaced and vulnerable kids in the city. Lilia was thriving, her nightmares fading, her laughter once again echoing through the high halls of the mansion.
And between Adrian and me, a quiet, powerful warmth had bloomed. It wasn't spoken in grand declarations, but in the quiet morning coffees on the balcony, the subtle brushes of his fingers against mine when we walked through the gardens, and the lingering, intense looks that made my breath catch in my throat.
He was changing. The cold, unyielding Shadow King was letting light into his world.
Until the black envelope arrived.
It was delivered on a Tuesday morning, postmarked from Milan, Italy. There was no return address, only a single sheet of heavy parchment sealed with black wax.
I was sitting in the library with Adrian when Victor brought it in.
"Boss," Victor said, his tone grim. "This just bypassed our security screen in New York. It was hand-delivered to our embassy contact."
Adrian took the envelope, slicing it open with a silver letter opener. As he pulled out the parchment, a small silver object slipped out and clattered onto the polished mahogany desk.
It was a delicate silver pendant shaped like a white lily—a pendant I had seen in photos hanging around the neck of Elena, Adrian's late wife.
Adrian’s face went entirely white. His hands, usually as steady as steel, began to tremble.
"What is it, Adrian?" I asked, standing up and coming around the desk.
He didn't answer. He unfolded the letter. Written in elegant, copperplate calligraphy were three short sentences:
You thought you buried me in the fire, my love. But a ghost never forgets who set the spark. I am coming home to reclaim my daughter.

At the bottom of the page was a signature that made my blood turn to ice:
Elena.
