Chapter 1 - THE CRACK IN THE FOUNDATION

The iron poker shattered the pale maple boards with a deafening, splintering roar that echoed off the immaculate white walls of Rebeca’s pristine living room. Dust particles swirled into the shafts of afternoon sunlight like a cloud of microscopic executioners. But Mateo did not care about the mess. He did not care about the shattered floorboards, the ruined designer rug, or the frantic, jagged gasps escaping his own throat.

Beneath the jagged hole, wrapped in a blanket of absolute pitch and suffocating earth, a tiny hand—cold, impossibly fragile, and caked in dry dirt—clutched frantically at his index finger.

“Emiliano?” Mateo sobbed, his voice cracking into a raw, bleeding shriek.

“Dad…” a whisper breathed up from the void, sounding less like a voice and more like a ghost struggling through wet cotton. “It hurts… it’s so dark.”

Mateo fell flat onto his stomach, ignoring the jagged splinters tearing into his chest and arms, and tore desperately at the subflooring. The wood groaned and resisted, nailed down with industrial precision—a testament to a meticulous, calculated construction job meant to last a lifetime. Meant to seal a tomb.

Across the room, Rebeca was no longer the picture of aristocratic composure. The pristine, elegant woman who lived for curated perfection had collapsed into a broken, shaking heap against the white sofa. Her manicured hands clawed at her own hair, her mascara bleeding down her cheeks in thick, black tracks.

“I had to!” Rebeca screamed over the sounds of splintering wood, her voice rising to a hysterical, manic pitch. “You don't understand, Mateo! If anyone found out, my life—our lives—would have been over! They would have taken everything!”

Mateo stopped tearing at the floor for a fraction of a second, his head snapping toward her. Veins throbbed violently against his temples, his eyes dilated with pure, unadulterated homicide.

“What did you say?” Mateo growled, a sound born deep in the chest of a father whose soul had just been dragged through hell.

Before Rebeca could stammer an excuse, the front door clicked open.

The soft, cheerful chime of a designer handbag dropping onto the entryway table cut through the nightmare. Footsteps clicked against the marble foyer—light, confident, and utterly oblivious.

“Rebeca, darling?” a smooth, deep voice called out from the hallway. “I’m back from the notary. Did you order the catering for the—?”

A tall, impeccably dressed man in a tailored charcoal suit walked into the living room. It was Esteban, Rebeca’s husband—a successful corporate lawyer, a pillar of the upscale Querétaro community, and a man who always smelled faintly of expensive cologne and untouchable power.

Esteban froze.

His eyes swept over the shattered floor, Mateo half-submerged in the subfloor like an animal digging up a corpse, and his weeping wife cowering against the sofa. For a terrifying, heartbeat-skipping second, Esteban’s face didn't show shock. It showed calculation.

And in that microsecond of silence, Mateo knew the horrifying truth:

Rebeca hadn’t done this alone.
