Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Lair“Where?” I demanded, pressing my weight against the door. “Where is Jonathan?”

Dr. Thorne leaned close to the crack in the door, his eyes darting frantically. “The old Grand Hotel downtown. The top two floors were bought out by an anonymous real estate trust six years ago. It’s a fortress. Private elevators, encrypted servers, armed security. He manages his entire global portfolio from the penthouse.”

“And the death certificate?” I asked. “Where are the original medical records showing he faked the cardiac arrest?”

“In my safe,” Thorne whispered, his voice breaking. “I kept them... as insurance. So he wouldn't kill me once I outlived my usefulness.”

“Give them to me,” I said firmly. “Give me those records, and I will make sure the Department of Justice protects you and your family. If you don't, I will name you as a co-conspirator in federal racketeering before the sun sets today.”

Thorne stared at me for a long, terrifying moment. The internal struggle was written on his withered face. Finally, he unhooked the security chain and opened the door.

Ten minutes later, I walked back down the porch steps carrying a thick, yellowed medical folder containing the original, unaltered blood tests, the faked EKG readings, and a signed confession from Thorne detailing how Jonathan Vance staged his own death to evade a pending federal grand jury indictment in 2016.

This was the smoking gun. Physical, forensic evidence of a decade-long conspiracy.

I got back into the Audi. My mother looked at the folder in my hands. “Is that it?”

“This is everything,” I said, my heart pounding with a mixture of fear and triumph. “With this, we can clear your name, put Jonathan behind bars for life, and dismantle every single asset he owns.”

“Then let's go to the FBI,” my mother said, reaching for her seatbelt.

“No,” I said softly, looking toward the downtown skyline rising in the distance. “The FBI will take days to process this, execute warrants, and secure the perimeter. Jonathan has private security and millions in liquid cash. If he realizes Thorne broke, he’ll be on a private jet to a non-extradition country in thirty minutes.”

“Clara... what are you saying?” my mother asked, her eyes wide with terror.

“We’re going to the Grand Hotel,” I said, starting the engine. “We’re going to end this where it started.”
