Chapter 8 - The Price of RestorationThree weeks later.

The morning sun filtered through the sparkling clean floor-to-ceiling windows of Unit 14C.
The scent of Marjorie’s cheap perfume was gone, replaced by the fresh smell of eucalyptus and fresh paint. My original furniture had been recovered from the unlicensed storage locker where Graham had dumped it, and every photograph was back in its rightful place on the walls.
On the dining table sat the morning newspaper. The headline on page three read:
LOCAL REAL ESTATE SCHEME UNRAVELED: FORMER EXECUTIVE AND ACCOMPLICES FACE D.A. CHARGES FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD
Graham was currently awaiting trial without bail, facing federal charges of wire fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy. Victoria Hale had accepted a plea deal, handing over all remaining corporate records for Apex Horizon in exchange for a reduced sentence—completely implicating Graham as the ringleader.
Marjorie Hale had been evicted from her rental home after her son’s accounts were frozen and was currently facing accessory charges for her role in the break-in and illegal occupancy.
My phone chimed on the table. It was a message from the hospital in Seattle:
“Clara, your sister’s post-op recovery is complete! She’s being discharged today.”
A deep, long-overdue breath filled my lungs.
I picked up my grandmother’s blue floral mug—which had been carefully cleaned and polished—and poured a fresh cup of coffee.
I walked over to the bedroom dresser and looked down at the restored frame containing the note my grandmother had written so many years ago:
Build something no one can take from you.
May you like
I smiled, taking a warm sip of coffee, feeling the sun hit my face in the quiet home that had always been, and would always remain, entirely mine.
What do you think of Clara's high-tech revenge strategy? Would you have handled Graham and Marjorie differently? Let me know in the comments below! 👇👇
