Chapter 1 - The Descent into the Red RoomThe kitchen chandelier above them seemed to hum with a vicious, low vibration, reflecting the crimson wine that Delphine Ashworth still held in her hand. For a woman standing on the precipice of utter ruin, Delphine’s fingers were remarkably steady—or perhaps she was simply paralyzed by the sheer impossibility of what had just unfolded.

"Matteo, darling," she tried again, her voice scaling an octave higher, coating itself in the honeyed poison of calculated innocence. "You’re making a mountain out of a molehill. The girl was throwing a hysterical fit. She locked herself in to get attention, and this—this beast of a maid—slammed the door on her own face to frame me. Look at her! She’s a manipulative parasite!"

Matteo Vance did not blink. His obsidian eyes, usually capable of freezing a cartel lieutenant with a single glance, were locked onto Delphine’s face with a flat, terrifying hollowness.

"Rafael," Matteo said, his voice entirely devoid of inflection.

"Already on it, boss," Rafael Cortez muttered.

Before Delphine could take another breath, Rafael’s large, calloused hand snapped out like a striking viper. He gripped her ivory-suited shoulder, spun her around with clinical precision, and slammed her against the marble countertop. The crystal wine glass flew from her hand, shattering into a thousand ruby shards against the floorboards.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Delphine screeched, her carefully constructed composure finally cracking down the middle, revealing the panic-stricken predator underneath. "My father is Senator Ashworth! The Chicago police commissioner is eating hors d'oeuvres at our summer home right now! When he hears about this—when he hears you allowed a common thug to assault me—your entire empire will crumble into ash!"

Matteo didn't acknowledge the threat. He didn't care about senators, commissioners, or federal indictments. Right now, the universe had narrowed down to a six-year-old girl currently breathing shallow, ragged gasps into her father's chest two flights down in the damp, freezing stone cellar.

"Take her to the master suite," Matteo commanded Rafael, his arms still tightly cradling Sofia, whose small head rested limply against his broad shoulder. "Lock the doors. Do not let her speak to anyone. If she so much as touches a telephone, break her fingers."

"Understood," Rafael grunted, hauling Delphine off the marble by her collar as if she weighed nothing at all.

"Matteo! MATTEO!" Delphine’s screams echoed up the grand staircase as Rafael dragged her away, her designer heels scraping uselessly against the mahogany steps. "You’ll regret this! You’re throwing away a dynasty for a brat who isn't even—!"

The heavy oak door of the master suite slammed shut overhead, cutting off her shrill voice.

Silence descended upon the kitchen once more, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the heavy, ragged breathing of Sofia in her father's arms.

Matteo slowly turned his head. His gaze fell upon Josephine Marsh, who was still kneeling on the kitchen floor, her hands stained with dust and dried blood, her face split by a deep, purple-bruised gash where Delphine’s diamond ring had torn her flesh.

"Josephine," Matteo said.

The maid swallowed hard, bowing her head. "Mr. Vance. I... I failed. I tried to stop her, but—"

"Stand up."

"Sir?"

"I said, stand up."

Matteo shifted Sofia into one arm, his free hand reaching down to catch Josephine by the forearm. The sheer strength in his grip was staggering; with a single upward pull, he hoisted Josephine to her feet, ignoring the way her bruised knees trembled under her weight.

"You stayed," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a gravelly register that made the hair on the back of Josephine's neck stand up. "When I left for Miami, I told every staff member in this house to protect her. They all fled the moment my car turned the corner because they were afraid of Delphine's temper. But you stayed."

"I couldn't leave her, Mr. Vance," Josephine whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes, tracing hot paths through the dust and blood on her cheek. "Miss Sofia... she’s all this house has left that's real. I didn't care about Delphine. I only cared about the little girl."

Matteo stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The cold, untouchable mafia boss—the man who controlled the docks, the underground currency exchanges, and the violent heartbeat of the Midwest—reached out with his blood-stained hand. With a gentleness that defied every monster he was rumored to be, he brushed a stray lock of hair away from Josephine’s swollen cheek, his thumb gently tracing the edge of the wound Delphine had inflicted.

"You saved her life," Matteo said softly. "In this house, people who save my blood become family. People who hurt my blood... well, Senator Ashworth is about to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping god."

He turned toward the grand staircase, carrying his daughter toward the light. "Follow me, Josephine. Your shift isn't over yet. Tonight, you watch the gallery. Because the real show is just about to begin."
