Chapter 10 - The Empire of LightThe reception was a triumph of scale, power, and unapologetic joy.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of violet and gold, the string quartet gave way to a live jazz band. Laughter, clinking crystal glasses, and warm applause filled the air beneath the illuminated marquee tent.
In the center of the dance floor, Matteo held Josephine in his arms for their first dance. She moved with effortless grace, her white silk gown swirling around her ankles, her head resting comfortably against his broad shoulder.
A few feet away, Sofia was spinning in circles with Rafael—who was surprisingly light on his feet for a hardened enforcer—giggling uncontrollably as her pink dress puffed out like a cloud.
From the edge of the lawn, a few high-ranking city officials whispered among themselves, watching the scene with a mixture of awe and residual fear. They saw the guns, the bodyguards, and the immense, untouchable power that Matteo Vance commanded over the city.
But for the first time in his life, Matteo didn't care about power.
He looked down at the woman in his arms—the maid who had been fired, abused, and cast aside by a society that valued superficial perfection over genuine soul—and realized she was the only anchor he had ever truly needed.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Vance?" Josephine murmured, looking up into his dark eyes with a playful smile.
Matteo tightened his grip around her waist, pulling her just a fraction closer, as if daring the entire world to try and tear them apart.
"I was just thinking," Matteo said softly, kissing the top of her head as the music swelled around them, "that hiring you was the best mistake I ever made."
"It wasn't a mistake," Josephine whispered, resting her hand over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful beat of a man who would burn the world down to keep her safe. "It was destiny."

And as the music played on into the warm Chicago night, the dark, forbidding Vance estate no longer felt like a fortress hiding secrets from the world.
It was a home. And its doors were finally open to the light.
